Free air 8" sub?

I have an Infinity 840w sub that I'm looking to put in my max. I want SQ and trunk space. Right now I have it in a small sealed box and it sounds decent, but I'm not quite happy with the look/size of the enclosure. I'm toying with the idea of mounting it free air in the rear deck. According to Infinity the sub can be used free air without a problem.

So, I have a couple questions. First, I know you're supposed to "seal the trunk" to do a free air sub... what should be used to seal it? (I assume this refers to the cracks behind the rear seat and around the rear deck.) Second, does anyone have firsthand experience with how free air subs in a max sound? Basically, do you recommend this or should I just keep it in a sealed box?

Thanks.

Exactly. The freeair driver actually uses the trunk, or rear cabin for the enclosure. Some stiff suspension drivers can sound really good freeair. Seal off the trunk from the the interior cabin. You can do this by making a custom baffle, between the rear seat and trunk. If the front waves of the driver mixes with the rear waves, you can have cencellation issues.
But if you like the idea of no enclosure, and a cool custom board, sounds like your on the right track.

kpr10is and myself did an install for an .orger. I did the rear deack and deadener and Kevin pretty much did everything else. He posted a link to some pics. Since then he has gone from the CDT 8 to an IDQ8.

Definitely seal off the trunk. Take the extra time. It made all the difference in his car as far a low end extension and cancellation. I was able to make a ring and mount it to the stock Bose subwoofer mount and mate it to the rear deck. Hope this helps you out.

just remember you can only put half the power on that sub w/ free-air. I think it rms 200 so you can only rms 100...

if its free air sub you could put as much rms needed, subs that are not free air could get damaged at high rms because of no enclosure.

btw make sure you seal off everything!! the slightest hole in the deck will cause nasty farting noises at high volumes

read the manual, under power handling limitations and free air.

it says it will be "likely half" the power handling. they do handle less power, but not necessarily half. take my old sub for example, the Brahma. it can take 1600 watts (thermally) in a small enclosure, but takes much much less to get it to reach xmax when played free air.
