so my brother went to build a box, and he comes back from home depot with this board marked mdf but it wasnt. i was looking at it and he goes the guy told me this is how they make mdf now, it was like a really thick dense peace of cardboard. i was like umm ok lets try it but i dont think it will work. stuff splintered VERY easly and drilling and screwing split the board easly. anyone know what this crap he brought home is? i brought him over a spare sheat of mdf i had, wich was enough for him. luckly.

 

Sounds like press board to me.

 

Does sound like particle board. The HD does carry MDF and it should be labeled accordingly. I just picked some up not too long ago to make speaker baffles.

 

what did you pay for a 4x8? HD and Lowe's carries it for around $18 a sheet. Try Birch, its a ***** to cut through, but much easier to work with and holds screws real well.

 

It was something like $13 or $14 for a sheet. I still have a bunch left over for another trunk project I have going on. Pics to follow

It just turns to powder...pretty much requires pre-drilling.

 

Hardboard is very similar to MDF as far as being pressed and not splintering, although density is more on the lower end..

On a similar note, 4x8 MDF sheets are $19 from the local lumber yard. Call in an order, free delivery, usually same day. F.T.W.

home depot usually has the worst quality for lumber. they get what all the other lumber yards pass on. but for mdf, it doesn't really matter.

for some reason, in my area, 3/4" mdf usually goes for $25-28 a sheet

the Homedepot near me doesnt sell big sheets of MDF, only like 2' x 4' sheets. and those sheets are 8 bucks a pop. Lowes cut me a deal on a 8 x 10 sheet and cut it in 4ths for only $15 plus tax. i build some pretty big boxes though for my Atlas.

 

But your first statement that I responded to was a very broad generalization of HomeDepot, not your local one. In which case isnt local to 99% of us and isnt the same case.

4x8 MDF sheets are about 22 bucks here. i try to never let them make cuts...they're not accurate at all. awhile back, i had them cut out panels for this box i was making...some panels were off by 1/8".

 

Thats because they forget blade thickness.

i just had them rough cut it. i do all the measurements myself.

 

In the suburbs surrounding philly all of the lowes are definately better than home depot especially when it comes to lumber. More selections and cheaper not to mention way better customer service. The lowes I go to doesn't even charge me for the cuts. $17 and I'm out the door and my box is already half way finished.

 

Free delivery FTW! I had to cut all my sheets in half to fit it in my trunk. I am of the opinion that anything I can get at HD will fit in my car... makes for a lot of disassembly/reassembly lol.

One of these days Ill figure out that my car is not a work truck.

 

I actually rented a truck when I needed to do a bunch of yard work, and had other things to throw out at the dump..... took this opportunity to pick up some MDF at Home Depot .

 

This thread is a little old, but I picked up some sheets of 3/4" MDF from Home Depot for my stereo project. $11.82 a piece for 4'x8', and that's Canadian dollars.
