Need some help putting together a system

Ok i'm putting together a system that i am going to buy around christmas time to replace my current kicker cvr/clarion amp. I already have polk speakers from my old car so that is not an issue. I was thinking of going alpine type x with an alpine pdx 1000.1 amp. Looking to spend around 800 to 850 with sub and amp so i know i can get some quality stuff. Can you guys give me some input as to if i should stay away from alpine and go with something better?

Alpine amps are fairly decent, from what I've read around various forums. They aren't top of the line, but you can do a lot worse. I haven't used them myself, but all posts I've seen from people who own them seem to like them quite a bit.

As far as speakers, I don't think I've read much on Alpines. I'd recommend getting some Rainbows from Don (Pearl96Max). He is a mod here and owns a shop in NJ and carries many quality lines. He can get you a pretty good deal on Rainbow speakers (excellent quality, handmade in Germany) and many other things.

I've had some Alpine Type-S subs for about 3 years now and they still look like new (except for some places where I knicked the cone, etc). All the surround material is still supple, no cracks or anything. If I was buying a new sub personally I would get a Type-X.

the PDX amps are very nice, but you're really paying for the size (and the 'digital' technology, no heatsinks yada yada etc). If size is not an issue, you could go for a physically bigger amp, and would be just as good quality and power or better for less money. The PDX amps are pricy...
Contacting Don is a good idea to get some quality stuff, shoot him a PM..

As far as the Type X, they just aren't worth the cost. Sure they sound great, hit fantastic lows, and would make a great addition to any system, but for $450, with the proper sub and box you can get just as loud and clear.

Take a look into Fi car audio, or RE, maybe Soundsplinter or even the new Ascendant Audio if they're out yet (anyone know?), better bang for your buck.

I know building a box is a large part of throwing a system together. If i could spend ~300-400 on a sub ~300-400 on an amp. I'd like to go a little cheaper on the sub and amp and i was just worried about how much a box would be to build. I don't know anyone around here that builds boxes and if i could find the right person to do it that would be nice if i could go ~150 or less on the box. I'm basically asking the cost of building a VERY GOOD box. I like to listen to rap so i'm not sure what type of box i would want in the first place. Also who is don?
