The BOSE Radio/Speaker Replacement thread
i am offically thankful for this Q&A saved me from buying all new speakers but now i got to buy some cables so for another week im radio less
so this means when i want to add a subwoofer to my aftermarket radio will it interfere with the stock speakers ?

The volume problem is a known issue and currently im looking for a cheap solution to the problem. The preamp voltages on alot of headunits arent high enough and the result is a lower volume. BOSE runs their signals at a lower voltage then alot of aftermarket headunits. This leads me to say that a cheap line driver that has some quality to it is what i am after. There are many high quality line drivers such as TRU Technologies one, but thats 300 bux, a big hit to the bank account. If you plan on keeping your car for a while, or plan to swap it out to your next car, then this option may be for you.
It is hard to find a good quality 4 channel line driver which has a good voltage boost on it. Memphis makes what looks to be a quality 2 channel line driver, but thats 6 channels and at like $65 bux online, 2 of them start to get pricey and you might as well buy the tru technology one and do it right with one unit.

Im 10000000% sure there is no kit for us with navigation.
Is the stereo under the nav unit is a true single DIN. If yes, I can probably fabricate something to mount an aftermarket stereo there. Please say its a single DIN...

Newbie Question here. I have a 2003 infiniti i35. Will the instructions in the FAQ work for my car as well. I only say the i30 listed.. Any information would be appreciated.
Crutchfield has no info on the car at all..
Also I saw someone mention that the question about how to get steering wheel controls to work is in FAQ #16 but I dont see a 16 or it in the FAQ. Is it possible to get an adapter to make the steering wheel controls work?

I have been looking but can't seem to find the dash kit to use with a bose HU on a 4th gen. The one listed at the beginning of this thread says non-bose.
Also, if any of you figure out which harness is best for volume issues let me know.
I will be replacing the bose in my 96 and have ordered a Clarion DUZ385SAT. It's fairly inexpensive and has only 2v pre-outs so I'm concerned about that issue.

couldn't seem to find this topic, so sorry in advance if it's been brought up before...
i'm trying to put the rear bose speakers into my stock non-bose 99 maxima. i know the harness is different, but i bought the bose speaker harness (the last few inches of it at least) from someone online so that it would fit the speakers.
i know bose speakers come with built-in amps and that those amps need to be powered by the harness, but i thought that hooking up just the audio portion of the harness wires would still work....and it didn't. apparently it needs the power wires too....but my max doesn't appear pre-wired for bose harnesses. is there any way i can make this work...or should just buy aftermarket?
oh i have a decently modern apline head unit - bought last year.

if you really want it i say go for it.
some people thinks it's not not worth it and they even say your a nut to do it.
well i'm a nut.
i converted my system to bose and it worth it.
i have all four amps toghether.
and all of em are wired.
i recondmend getting the right wire gauge or they'll take turns on shutting off.
it took me at least 30minutes to do everything and it's worth it.
so foar the only amps that sounds decent enough to pump out bass yet sound clear are the 89-91 and 97-99 bose.

i dont know if you guys covered this on this thread.(im pretty sure you guys did but its sooo long and i dont understand half of the stuff you guys are talking about . lol) anyway soo 2000 i30's bose sub is starting to sound really bad and i hear a lot of vibrations than any base. especially when i listen to trance, house and that kind of music and some rap music the base just sound horrible. and i dont even listen to music that loud soo i know im not pushing the limits of the sub and my trebles are set to high and my base is to 2 bars.
so is my sub giving up on me? and if so can i just buy a after market sub from like circuitcity and tell them to install it and will it fix it and sound good? or should i just get a replacement bose unit ( i think if im spending money i should just upgrade)
p.s. also can you guys post what size and what kind of sub i should get. i dont want ppl from the other block to hear me coming i just want it to sound nice and deep inside the car.
thanx and please help im such a noob when it comes to audio.

I recently purchased an AVIC-F900BT which has 2.2 preouts. This was installed in an 03 G35 Coupe w/ Bose.
Im currently experiencing volume issues, which I understand is due to the low preout voltages.
The install was done using the Metra 7551. If I were to instead use the 7550, will it make use of my bose amp or am I pretty much screwed?
Im dreading not upgrading to the F90BT which has 4volt outs
Thanks

I'm looking for someone to drop some knowledge and help me out with replacing my factory Bose h/u in my 04 Maxima.
I installed my Alpine 9886 last night using the 7551 harness and 7404 dash kit.
Insanely easy to install, smooth as butter.
My issue: LACK OF BASS.
The 9886 used 4V pre-outs and the volume is great but I'm almost certain that the factory sub(s) are not active.
What could the issue be? All other speakers work and all wires are hooked up with the harness. The subs worked fine an hour before the install with the factory h/u.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

popping sound
Ok, these directions were great and I guess I followed them so closely I have that same popping sound. System sounds great when playing but whenever I change the source or change the radio station, I get a loud popping sound. Did you ever figure out a way to correct that issue? Seems like it is the amp popping to me but no idea how to stop it.
For those interested, I finally got my f900bt installed. It went pretty much without a hitch, maybe a little hiccup. That was quickly resolved though. I didn't have to do any by-passing of the "bose" sub or anything thing like that, just plug and play.
I used the Scosche adaptor and I must say that I don't quite like it. The color is slightly different and it is annoying the **** out of me. It's a nice tight fit, just the wrong color. I'm going to hit the salvage yards up and see if I can't find an OEM double din, along with some other parts I need (can you say blower motor?) I gotta have the clean install look, and I'm just not getting it with the Scosche. The wiring harness and antenna adaptor worked very well and the Tech guys at Scosche were very helpful with my little "hiccup" Kudos to them.
On another note, my rear speakers are 5.25" and my fronts are 6.5". I have a 2k max and this seems to be different from what I see other as having, a la 6.5 in the front and back. Anyone else have the 6.5 front and 5.25 rear set-up?

F90BT
I want to do exactly what Emaximus has done on my 2000 Maxima with Bose, except with a F90BT. Do you have a list of the parts you needed to get the job done? I would like to utilize the Bose amp as you have done. I really appreciate any help.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...%3D4%26ps%3D42
Now, this is installed but it is temporary since I'm not really feeling the miss match color. I found an OEM GXE kit that is factory and will give the unit that factory look that all Maxima owners should demand with their aftermarket purchases. If you decide to go OEM, you can get the wiring harness and the antenna adaptor off ebay for cheap. Since you have the same Max as I do, you can PM me if you need help with the install. I can walk you through it. You will def like the f90bt, it was buggy when it first came out, but with the 2.0 update, it works very well. Like I said, PM me if you have any questions.

THanks for this thread. 00 Bose here, dead HU. I am thinking of the -51 harness and an entry HU from crutchfield. I'm concerned about volume issues as mentioned here. Can anybody recommend a specific receiver that works for them with the 51 and allows sufficient volume (including from sub)? I don't need to blast my ears out, but I do want some respectable power.
99 Maxima SA need Bose CD replaced
Hey guys, I just bought a 99 Max SE and the BOSE indash CD player is bad. Wont read, gives ERR error, if it plays at all, the sound is all staticky.
The radio, cassette player and CD changer in the trunk work fine. I like the look and controls so I want to keep it, but have it repaired.
Any suggestions besides CARsterohelp.com in Florida? They are asking about $200 to repair once I remove and ship it.
Thanks for any help. Let me know

Woot!
Thanks for this thread. I just replaced the Bose HU on my 2000 Max. I bought a Pioneer DEH-4000UB from Crutchfield for $148 (outlet version). That unit appears to have discontinued the day after I bought it and is now the 4100. I specifically wanted a unit with a 4V preamp output. I know at least one person above has had problems with that not creating enough power (a lot of HUs have 2V, which is likely to be even more of a problem. I found one or two in my price range at 5V, but they were lacking in other features), but this thing does pump it out and very, very loud no worries there. I will never listen to it at full. I'm sure it would blow the speakers. The sub is working. I have honestly only had it going for a few min and only listened to one track, but the thing is loud and sub works certainly at at least moderate and above volumes.
Install used the free stuff from crutchfield, including the din adapter (so that a small HU fits), nissan antenna adapter, and the 51 harness. All the colors match and from the HU's blue I attached the two blue from the 51 harness (amp power and power antenna). I ground the HU to the car's chassis. For the amp ground, coming from the small 51 harness, I actually have that wired directly to the large harness' chassis ground.
Like I said, I've only had this going for a few min and have not even had it with the engine on, so I don't know if I'll have the ground feedback or not, but the 4V from this Pioneer HU is definitely throwing out all the watts you'll need and installation went without issue (although I've not actually mounted it back in to the dashboard yet
).

Gaping is not perfect, but I think that is more the result of my having kicked the dash board as opposed to anything else. Since this was a rear-usb HU, I had to run the USB connector through a hole in the back and I hot glued it to the roof of the new compatment. Not sure how well it will hold yet. Zip ties would have been better, but it should be ok. This is a 9+ year old car; nobody's going to worry about a few gaps here or there. The old bose speakers are still thumping quite nicely with this particular unit. I did drive it today and noticed no problems like lack of bass or skipping or feedback loops or anything else. So very, extremely pleased with $150.

unanswered question, if i replace the stock door speakers will they need rewired from the hu? or not?
also has anyone taken the stock bose sub out and replaced it with another 8inch on a different amp? i have never delt with a stock amp like this

No rewiring... Just get the Nissan wiring harness and whatever HU you buy will work without re-wire. Not sure about the sub.
I tried to do the AUX add (jack in front panel) to my Bose, and I think I killed it (any tips on getting a cd out?)
But, lo and behold, my MOM happens to have a Sony CDX-F5710 laying around - apparently she was having CD problems (I barely notice them) and just replaced it with a different HU.
I picked up the Metra amp integration harness and already had the diversity adaptor, so I have like $23 in the rig to this point. It sounds NICE, have to keep the bass reasonable or it breaks up.
I have an XM SkyFi2, mounted on one of those metal tabby things. It works OK, but the missus snags herself on it when she rides with me. I happened to be scoping out Circuit City when I happened upon an XM Direct Tuner (old style) for $20 which of course I grabbed. The Sony HU adaptor was at another CC for $9. So, for less than $60, I have a really nice sound system that does what I want, had to splice in a jack to use my MP3 player but no big deal. And with the real estate freed up by halving the size of the HU, I am thinking of remixing my instrument panel in 1/8" aluminum and adding some 2" gauges.

Install Kit Question
I can't find any mention in this thread about how the installation kits fit. All the pictures of the installation kits show a flat bottom where it fits against the climate control.
I have the Bose 6-disc cd changer with automatic climate control. The radio faceplate is not flat along the bottom as the installation kits show but right below the volume **** is a 1/4" x 1 1/4" tab that fits into the top of the climate control faceplate. What installation kit are you guys using that has this?

I have a 99 SE w/o the Bose and only the two front speakers work and they are very quiet at that (could possibly only be the tweeters working) I bought the car like this, are the speakers blown or are these cars known for popping fuses ??
Thanks for any help

Turn the bass up and put your hand to the door speaker grille to determine if anyting is going on down there the speaker could be blown or disconnected
Hello everyone. I have an 03 Maxima GLE and I replace my factory Bose HU with an Alpine CDA-9886 yesterday utilizing the 70-7551. I am satisfied except for the actual volume levels that I am experiencing. The HU has 4v pre outs which i heard could cause the problem if it was to low. Also after reading this thread i see alot of people went back to the Scosche...
My question is, "Does the Scosche adapater help with the low level volume or do you think it would be better to just replace the speakers?"
From what i have read i can use the 70-7550 harness so i can use the internal amplifier and Crutchfield says i can use these speaker harnesses so i will not have to rewire the car.
Can someone please chime in with there experience or can someone please advise what would be the better option. I am leaning toward replacing the speakers, but if i can get a high level of volume using the scosche adapter i would entertain that idea also.
Thanks in advance

This is how I am gathering this information:
1) If I am looking to replace the HU in my 2k2 Max I will need the 7551 harness or will I need the 7550 which would connect my HU signal via speaker wire?
2) I should look to find a HU that has the features that i need plus a 4v output to avoid the low volume output some are experiencing. If I can't find a unit that has the 4v output then look for some kind of signal boost?
3) If I want to change my sub but keep the Bose speakers while using a new HU, make sure that the HU has sub preouts. Make sure the stock sub is disconnected while using the after market sub.
**** Does anyone know where I can get custom cabinets that fit the back of the trunk of a 2k2 Max?
Please correct me on any of my findings but I really feel that I am starting to see what is going on.
