5.5th Gen Sub/Amp Question
5.5th Gen Sub/Amp Question
So, I MAY be getting into a 2002 SE with Bose sometime soon.
I'm trying to do some research before hand.
I currently have a Kenwood DNX8120, 5-channel Alpine PDX-5 and a JL 10" Sub. I also have Infinity speakers but I don't intend to take those out of the 99.
How do I bypass the Bose amp and sub and use mine? What harness do I need?
I see only two harnesses on Crutchfields site. The one that allows the stock amp to be integrated into an aftermarket HU (link) and the one that just connects the speakers I guess to the aftermarket HU (link).
My question is which harness I need. Also, will the Alpine amp power the Bose speakers enough to sound good? Or do I need to change out the speakers as well? There is 6 speakers in the 5.5th gens right?
Here is my over-all plan for my system:Thanks. I appreciate the help. I've been searching Maxima.org and here for the last hour or two and haven't been able to find a similar situation. All the posts I see have to do with adding an amp or sub to the Bose HU and not to an aftermarket HU.

The stock Bose speakers in this vehicle run at ~2 ohms if I'm not mistaken. If you're not swapping them out for aftermarkets, I would not run them off of the PDX, as I don't believe its 2 ohm stable for 4 channels, let alone 5.
That car has 7 speakers. Two a-pillar tweeters, two 6.5's up front, two 5.25's (which can be replaced with 6.5's very easily), and the 8" bose subwoofer. I used the metra 70-7550 harness, which doesn't drop the input into the bose amp into a low-level (RCA). It keeps them as high-level (speakerwires). You can use the 7551 harness if you're overly cautious, but I've been fine with my 7550 for over a year now. As far as adding the JL sub, you can install the PDX, but just run that 1 channel to the sub, or swap out all the speakers and use it in 5 channel mode.

http://www.bose.com/controller?event...on=5&x=10&y=12 If you click on the "Can I change my Bose sound system?" and read what they say about changing head units, you will find what I mentioned above is a true statement. The wiring can still be used but is so thin, you will not want to. I just left the wiring and added my own wiring to my own speakers. You allready have the stuff you need, just replace it all. Use your amp for your interior speakers or your head unit if it's powerful enough.
PDX5 should be stable at 2ohms. When we sold the PDX4 at work it made the same power at 4ohm than it did at 2ohms.
Bose runs their drivers at 1ohm so you can't really use the factory drivers for anything if you wanna run the PDX-5.
What you wanna do is buy the Metra 70-7551 wire harness to hook your deck's power/gnd/etc up to the car's wiring. For the PDX5 you should have 3 pairs of RCA inputs I believe, so just those hook those up to your Kenwood. Run speaker wire from the amp to the drivers accordingly. (Assuming you have new ones).

Thanks guys.
What is a driver? The tweeter?
How I have my current car setup is I have RCA's running to the amp from the head unit. I also have this wire that has 6 wires inside of it running from the back. The one side is spliced into the after market harness (so I don't cut up the OEM one), and then goes to the amp and plugs into the speaker terminals there.
Is that what I should be doing on the 02?

Simply put, a driver is a speaker, tweeter, woofer, whatever. And the 6 wires enclosed together I refer to as a 'Speedwire'. It's just a way to run 1 wire instead of 6. Usually they're 9 though (2 for every speaker and 1 remote wire). The way yours is set up is the amps speaker outputs is ran next the headunit to connect to the wires going to the speakers.
Thanks guys.
