NON Maxima stereo question

Hopefully the powers that be won't ban me for asking for advise from the stereo guru's concerning a set up that is non Maxima related.

I have an '01 Max with BOSE and recently purchased the Metra 7551 wiring harness. After getting it in the mail, I noticed it is nothing more than the 7550 harness that has had the 8 speaker leads shortened and replaced with RCA's. My father owns a '99 Vette also with the factory BOSE system. Last spring he ordered a Pioneer DEH-P77DH to replace the AC Delco head unit. I have snooped around on one of the many Corvette forums to see what other Vette owners have done as far as stereo replacement and the wiring harness. One of the most complete write ups involved using a Peripheral harness feeding into 2 seperate Peripheral adaptors for changing the speaker level into RCA inputs. I don't have the actual part numbers here in front of me, I left them at my fathers place.

Can I use a typical "off-the-shelf" harness from say, AutoZone, or other harness selling store and cut back the 8 speaker leads and replace them with RCA outputs much like has been done to create the 7551 harness for our Maxima's? If so, this would drastically eliminate the amount of B.S. that has to be used or stuffed back behind the dash.

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

I believe you can. But just to be safe, get a meter and test some wires.

At the VERY most, you'll need a unit similar to the PAC OEM NIS2, not 3 separate devices like the Corvette guys are currently doing.

Heh, 'back in the day', before the 70-7551 was created, we used to simply splice in snipped RCA's onto the speaker leads on the factory harness and then just plug the aftermarket deck right in. Worked the same.

Thanks Nilesh. When you say test with a meter, what exactly am I looking for or testing for? On the RCA's, which wire is the pos, and which is the neg? I always assumed the "outer" strands were the negs and the smaller inner wires were the pos. Am I correct?

I thought there was some professional installers on here that might have come across this scenerio.

Not quite, though you are right on which is positive vs. negative. On the plug itself, the center pin is positive and the 'ring' or shroud is negative.

I would test the outputs of the OEM HU and compare the voltage/impedance to the RCA outs on the aftermarket HU. Just to make sure it's the same. I'm fairly certain it is, but no harm in checking.
