how to maximize bass

i just got my first "system" the other day in my 3rd gen. i got 2 kicker cvr 10"
and a jvc 540 sumthin watt amp.

the subs are in 2 separate sealed boxes.. not too big. and i was wondering if there were any tricks as to how you maximize the bass of the subs. what would be a good design for a box?
sealed or ported? if so how big do you think it should be?
also i have heard that if you put cotton in the boxes it makes it hit harder. what do you guys think about that?

Box size is very important.

The guys that designed and made the subs http://www.kicker.com/compvr say to use a sealed box between .8 and 3.5 cu ft, or a sealed box between 1.255 and 1.75 cu ft.

Now, the only spec that concerns me the sensitivy, which at 83 is very low, so it'll take a fair bit of juice to get loud.

Owners manual here http://www.kicker.com/sites/default/...mpVR%20f01.pdf
It's a pretty good read.

Stuffing a box with insulation won't make it "hit harder", it slows the speed of the wave down to make the driver think the box is larger than it actually is.

port it if you want it louder.

the 83 db sensitivity is fine...those measurements are carried out with a 1khz tone anyhow. the subs wont ever play that high...if the amp is tuned correctly.

so i just did the math. or atleast i tried to.. i did the formula for a trapezoid prizim. it came out to be 2040 in^3 or 5181.6 cm^3

i guess thats about right lol

on the website it says that the minimum size should be 51 liters.. umm.. wtf?
im thinkin typo and it should be 5.1 L.
anyways. how big do you guys think the box should be?

have you had aquariums before? a 10 gallon aquariums size is about 51 liters, so that calculation should be correct. a aquarium is the best reference i can think of

how do u go about porting it? is at as simple as drilling a port in it? how bigshould the hole be? where should it be placed? do i put one or multiple?

nah, unfortunately it's not that easy. ported boxes are generally much larger than their sealed counterparts. the port have to be a certain size and length to achieve the specific tuning you're aiming for.

http://www.caraudio.com/forum/enclos...asic-info.html

as you can see...the port is a channel that leads into the box. you can have the port come out of the box if you want, but people just design it inside the box to save room. in simple terms...ported boxes uses the rear waves behind the subwoofer to help increase total bass output.

for your two 10s, i would just shoot for 1.5-2 cubes.
