So I'm just shopping around for a car to replace my silly little '99 Max which is racking up more miles faster than the Dow can drop.

I walk into this one place in the Los Angeles area and I'm pretty interested in either the 2K2 Max or 2K2 Altima. Soon enough, I'm (almost) sold on the Altima when I notice the small stickers next to the big info sticker and see a $5000 (yes, you read that right) dealer markup on the car. WTF!

I look around on the other cars in the lot and they all have a markup, including the 2k1's! 2K1 Maximas had an average markup of $1000. 2K2 Maximas were $2000, 2K1 Altimas were $2k, and 2K2 Altimas were $5000!

I'm talking to the guy (and all his people) and they don't want to budge from the $5K markup. He even takes me to the sales manager! I tell them that the deal is off, that I can go down to Mercedes (C230K), Jaguar (X-type) or Lexus (IS300) and they will sell it to me without the markup. He (sales manager) tells me that I'm smoking crack, that they have a markup too and tells me that I hope I can find the car I want. Sore a$$ loser, he knows he lost the deal and doesn't want to face that fact. But I can see he's hoping that I'll go to the other dealerships nearby (they're all part of the same group) and keep the money in the "family", if you know what I mean.

Just for the hell of it, I lookup AutoNation for other dealers that have the car, called them, and lo and behold they don't even have that markup! Get this, a guy at Brown and Brown Nissan of Mesa, Arizona says that he considers markups unethical and refuses to do it on any of his cars! Guess who's gonna get my business?

I can understand markups on "exotic" cars such as the BMW Z8, or a Bugatti, but on a "consumer" car? Blah. I think it's unethical and legalized robbery.

If you walk into a dealer and notice these markups on a "regular consumer" car, tell them to take it off or you're walking elsewhere. Use the net to find a dealer that won't have it.

I just had to vent off some steam... I don't like being "legally" robbed just to increase some idiot's bottom line.
