Synthetic or not to sythetic

When I last did my oil change, I used Castrol 5w-30 Syntec not knowing that it was not all synthetic oil. Well its time to change the oil again and this time I bought Castrol 5w-30 Synthetic, all synthetic at $4.99 a quart. This stuff is expensive. Which is better and which do you use. Just curious, thanks for your opinion.

Yup, Mobil 1 SuperSyn 5W-30 (newer vehicle formula)
Roughly the same price per quart (though you can buy 5qt bottles at Walmart for $18.95 over here, which lowers it to roughly $4/qt)

Filter: Buy a NAPA Gold filter, it's manufactured by WIK (sp?) and is known to be the best filter in production.

You mean WIX.

for the Mobil-1 5w30, but I use the Mobil-1 filter M1-110 with that as well. The car takes apprx 4.25q at the most so dont use the whole 5gal jug. The dipstick is somewhat of a pain to read unless the car has been sitting for a while. Also look into a brand known as Amsoil. You can PM iwannabmw if you want to buy any, its better then mobil-1 in a few way but not by far. They also have good filter (replace every 6months) and their oil is replaced once a yr, and obvioulsy synhetic as well.

Technically, Amsoil Series 2000 is the best overall oil. Mobil 1 is currently the best synthetic oil available and the easiest to get.

Napa Gold oil filters are not the best filter in production.

Mobil M1-105 filter what you need if you are looking for something big. Twice the girth of Napa filter.

Bill, just curious, why do you feel this way about a NAPA filter?

Because I've seen little that alludes to it as being the 'best' filter in production from a production, quality, or durability standpoint.

That doesn't imply it's bad, I just question it as being the "best", especially for Maxima applications using the M20 x 1.5 thread.

Oh, now I get it. Agreed, not the "best", but I doubt its any worse than others. Not that I happen to be using one right is any consideration mind you.

Actually I tried it because it has the silicone ADV like the Nissan, and it also has the Ford styled bypass valve that I'm partial to. Wix tech support told me in an email that it's nominal micron rating is 19u. So I figured its probably comparable to a Nissan. And at the same price as my local dealer charges for an oem, you'd think I'd wise up one of these days and just go back to an oem since I'm looking so hard to find one just like it.
