Engine oil cleaner??

Hmm, I'm going to change my engine oil. My dad told me that my oil is way to stinky and dirty. He told me to get engine oil cleaner. I'm not sure what he's saying. He said it's a kind of cleaner you put in the engine oil, and then let the engine run for a while and drain the engine oil out. That thing will clean out the the engine. Since he's not gonna help me to do my first time oil change myself. Does anyone knows what it is, also, my car is 2000 with 78k on it. What kind of engine oil should I get? Thx a lot

Oil

I wouldn't use any oil cleaner. If there is any sludge in your engine, this could break it loose, possibly clog oil passages and cause you problems with upper end lubrication. Motor oils for gasoline engines have detergents to keep them clean, if you change it regularly it will stay clean. Sometimes "old school" solutions are just that - old school.

I know this comment will get some aggressive responses, especially based on the posts I've seen lately, but I would use any mainstream (ie. Valvoline or Castrol) oil 5w/30 with an OEM Nissan filter (get the one for the 3.3 litre V-6 Xterra. It has slightly more capacity than the Max filter). It seems most people on this forum own stock in synthetic oil companies. I have never had an oil related problem with conventional oils, as long as it is changed 3000 - 3500 miles. Sure synthetics are better but not required for everyday duty. The key is a good filter and frequent oil changes to keep your max's engine happy.

If you use the Amsoil cleaner you won't have any problems with clogged oil passages. I've used it on many vehicles, to include my parents dodge shadow which went an entire year on 1 oil change with dino oil. You wouldn't believe the sludge.
