Mobile is a town on the Gulf Coast of Alabama.

Mobil is part of the large oil company Exxon-Mobil. The two (Mobile and Mobil) are not the same.

 

I used to use the 5/30 Mobil 1 until I switched to the extended formula last year. I have 3 vehciles (95 Chevy truck, 2003 Forester, 92 maxima). I run the extended Mobil 1 in all three and change it every 7,000 miles. The Maxima now has 235,000 miles on it, no leaks, no burning. It gets red lined occasionally and spends many days at 85 plus mph. World's best engine! I also run Mobil 10/30 in the tranny (5 speed).

Only other car, a 1951 MGTD gets 20/50 valvoline.

Um. Engine oil in the transmission? Doesn't that transmission call for some kind of MTF or gear lube?

 

At about 120,000 miles, the transmission began shifting a bit stiff after running it at freeway speeds. I asked the service tech at Nissan what they recommended. Since here in Maine we get sub zero temps in the winter for weeks at a time (in spite of globabl warming!), he suggested the synthetic engine oil. Many of the mechanics at the dealership also ran synthetic (Mobil 1). I tried it, and I have had great success. I don't baby the car, and it shifts with two fingers. I change the oil every 30,000 miles. It's been over 110,000 miles since I began using the Mobil 1.

I had a Dodge Colt Vista back in the late 80's. I had a transmission oil change and the service tech put in 90 wt oil. The transmission lasted about 6 months.

My 92 Maxima is still going stong on the original clutch and transmission. In my Subaru, I was going to put in Mobil 1, but the service tech explained that the Subaru spec oil was a synthetic blend and I should stick with it which I have.

In the 51 MG, I use a 90 wt synthetic in the transmission and rear end. It made a big difference in this old classic.

considering that most auto manufacturers use Mobile 1 (nissan, Chevy (Vette) etc), and that they are the first company (I believe) that came out with a synthetic - I wouldn't go with anything less.

 

I used Royal Purple 5w/30 in the winter...

and Royal Purple 10w/30 in the summer

 

Amsoil was the first with an API-rated synthetic.

 

i live in miami and i put mobil1 syn. 10w-30 thats. because my car has more than 100000 miles

 

mobil 1 5w-30. oil is clean at every change; used since new, 188k miles

 

mobil 1 5w30 every 5k miles

 

mobil 1 is good but Royal Purple is a lot better

I've tried many oils and filters in my '99(including Mobil 1). I think it's best with Castrol Synthetic 0w30 European Formula and the Napa Gold filter.

I am using the Mobil 1 synthetic ATF.

 

Castrol GTX is the best regular oil ever made, PERIOD.

 

OK, please expand on this statement.

 

From what I have read on the oil Forum, Castrol GTX has been shown to go 8000 miles for just a dino/regular oil where other oils are done at 3-5k

 

I dumo it just smells so good, haha jokes, no it seems to protect better then penzoil (my experience) and its way better then some no name brand oils that i have used in other cars

 

All you have to do is look in the stickies above to see that GTX produces better results when it is tested after use. It's all in the stickies.

 

Mobil 1 5w-30 , do you Max guys run 10w-30?

 

There's no real reason to run 10w-30 if you're using high quality synthetics. 5w-30 and 0w-30 do just as well (or better) at operating temperature and flow better when cold.

I havent changed my oil before on my car i usually have the dealership do it but i ran out of free coupons from when i bought it so iam going to start to doing it myself so my question is where is the oil filter is at the bottom or on the top so where in the middle.

 

In the 6th Gen Max, the filter is located behind the right front wheel well cover. Just lift up the cover and the filter is mounted horrizontally with the "bottom" of the filter facing the right side of the car. The 2002 may be different.

Question, well really I'm confused. All of you say mobile is in the car from the factory, if this is the case then why does the owners manual and my dealership say the recomeded oil is Castrol GTX 5w30?

 

All of us have not said that. It has been reported that Corvettes come from the factory with Mobil 1, but certainly not a Max. That is why Castrol GTX is recommended until your Max is fully broken in -- at about 10 K miles. Then you can switch to fully synthetic motor oil.

 

Mobil 1 line of products are top grade but I can get Pennzoil Platinum for $3.99/Q, I wouldn't spend another dollar/Q for Mobil1.

On BITOG, the UOA on PP on different vehicles has been outstanding and I use it on my other vehicle. Since my Max needs a SL formula, I am on Pennzoil HM oil.

 

So i was strolling through Walmart cuz there was nothing else to do while we were waiting to kill time before the movie started and noticed Mobile 1 full synthetic for $19.99 for 5 quart bottle. I ended up buying 5 of those. LOL.

 

I use the synthetic but am thinking of switching to Royal Purple...for filter, anything BUT Fram

 

If a car is a daily driver 90% of the time <like mine> i think just about any oil at 3k intervals will protect your baby. I used to run mobil 1 in my S2000 because thats what the manuel called for.
My 00 max calls for Castrol gtx 5-30 weight, i look at it like, if the manuel calls for it why not use it. Not to mention Castrol is made in Germany, and we know how those German Engineers get down.

Side Note: Many bmws run Castrol from the factory.

 

Castrol is a German company, but virtually all of the Castrol products sold in the USA are made here.

All BMWs run Castrol from the factory (although definitely not GTX).


Castrol GTX 5w-30 is a great oil for all but the hardest-driven Maximas. It should have no problem with 5k mile intervals.

 

Castrol is a lubrication company that has been owned by BP for about 4 years or so. I think it was a British company even before it was bought by BP -- which, at least for now, keeps it a British company.

Castrol has lube plants around the world. There is some Castrol synthetic motor oil that says on the label that it was made in Germany -- the rest could be made in any of their plants -- unless the label specifically says otherwise.

You are right about GTX being good for 5 K mile intervals. It's the best widely available dino oil out there, IMHO.
