What oil would you suggest for a 280k 97 maxima

Change all your fluids regularly to make it last.
For the motor 5W30 is OEM. You can use regular or synthetic. Generally you can go 4 to 5k between change with regular oil, twice that for synthetic.
Automatic tranny or 5-speed?
For auto trannies use Nissan D matic or Dexron III.
Power steering fluid is Dexron III as well.
5-Speed manual you want to use GL-4 gear oil only.

Where do you live? If it's a warm area, you may benefit from 10w40. Thicker oil lubricates those areas where the internal bearings have been worn down to size. I've used 10w40 and had no issues, but then winter came along and there was some initial knocking at startup...so I dropped to 5w30. Come summer, it's back to 10w40. I used to use the non-synthetic or syn-blend oils...but now I'm with synthetic all the way. I've used castrol regular and yeah it's fine, but personally I like synthetics. Mobil, Valvoline...hell, i've even experimented with Delo 15w40 and 5w40 diesel oil. on my next oil change, i'll try mobil 0w40 European formula.
I've learned to use either Toyota Red or Xerex Asian for coolant/anti-freeze. That Prestone silicate stuff tends to seize waterpumps.
Valvoline red fluid is my favorite for transmission fluid. This and my Camry loved it. That's also the same thing you can use for power steering fluid.
