Garage Makeover

Hey all,

It's been about a year now since we've moved into our new home. The garage was the final room needing a good paint job. So, a few months ago I started the process of finishing the garage. There was only the basic tape/mud job done when it was built 8 years ago and the drywall had yellowed since.

My goals of this makeover are organization, clean, corner workbench, storage, and a slight wow when people see it.

Here's what I've done so far.

Before:

Finish drywall (actually hired a guy, it's a art to do it right)

Prime

Flat white ceiling/upper wall, satin Behr 'gray area' lower wall

Laser level to outline stripe

Stripe done

Clean up and painting finished

More pictures here

I've started putting my tools back up on the wall. Trying to get most things off the floor can be difficult.

Next will be to plan out my corner workbench.

Stay tuned.

David

Thanks!

The only thing I didn't do was the drywall finishing. I tried it on two walls and realized it was taking way too long. It looked good, but the sanding was killing me. I hired a drywall guy as a side job and it was a great deal. He quoted me $300 to do the entire garage. I supplied the materials, about $50 worth, and gave him a little tip since he did so well. He said it is a level 4 of 5 finish. Level 5 being an entire skim coat of mud over all the drywall.

After he was finished, my wife and I did all the painting. Lots of hard work, but worth it.

And here's the workbench painted. It has quite a bit of storage. I guess I need to buy more tools to fill it up.

Yup, you can never have too many tools.

Whats the length, width, and height of the garage?

3 car garage, roughly 30' wide, 25' deep, and 10' ceilings. It's not a perfect rectangle, but with those dimensions, you get the idea.

Thanks guys.

I'm in a rural town, so this size house is in an actual price range we could afford. If we were in western Washington, it'd be different.

I just picked up a used cabinet today. We'll see what I can do with it... Thinking I'll use it as a sort of guide so I can make another one like it to have an almost matching set.

That's in the plans, I think it will go at the end by the tool box so the other end can be an open to cut wood if needed.

And thanks!

Thanks! It's my first woodworking project and it turned out nice. My father does woodworking, so I guess I learned from him over the years.

Now to consider under cabinet lighting for the seat area, vise clamp, and I don't know what else.

What are some must haves for a usable space?

Since you have a power outlet by the bench, a bench grinder would go great.

That'll probably happen someday. When I need one, I'll get one, but I don't want to spend money to have it sit there.

Thanks

I got a smoking deal on a bench grinder years ago. However I don't use my bench grinder much any more. I use my 4 1/2" corded/cordless and mini air grinders all the time. I think I need to turn the bench grinder into a buffer/polisher.

Late to the party here Dave, awesome work! Great transformation into a very usable space! That workbench should give you years of great service.
