Nissan's turbo 5th gen

Wondering if anyone has a link to info on it, I remember having read about it before in sport compact car maybe? But it has been a long while, just wondering how much boost, turbo size, dyno, etc etc - if I remember it wasn't too impressive? The car looks GOOD though (it's in the Nissan archives in socal ) and maay see 1mile/year

a year or 2 ago cattman told me Jim Wolf just modified the turbo 'kit' they had for the '95 maxima to fit on the 2k. IIRC it has a '95 JWT ECU modified for the 5th gen....

question about the dyno....how come the whp drops right after 5000rpm?

seems like VIAS is not activated or something.

maybe that '95 JWT ECU I cant remember exactly what cattman told me. It lost some features by doing this...

You are right about the VIAS

The engine listed is a VQ30DE, so that would mean that they took out the VI manifold, as VQ's with VI are listed as VQ30DE-K. I don't know why they did this?? Maybe it is because the 95 ECU did not work well with the VI?

It says JWT-tuned Nissan ECU. What's the deal there? I thought no one had cracked the code and made any modifications to the 99+ ECU. Did I miss something?

I believe the 5th Gen ECU controls the VIAS. That is why the whp drops around 5000 RPM. So, if they have a 95 ecu in the 5th Gen that is why the VIAS isn't functioning.

I have the old SCC article on it. I believe the ECU was programmed to run 10psi in the midrange while having to drop to around 6psi at redline. I believe they programmed the ECU like this because the stock injectors would have been maxed out at stock fuel pressure.

So why didn't they just put a harlan or MSD switch in there?
I know the VIAS is different from the VI for a 4th gen, but you just need to attach the relay to the VIAS lever, no?

IMHO that Max is ugly. I'm not fond of the two-tone.

because lets face it. It was a prototype car that no one really gave a crap about. Show cars don't need stuff that really works well, because on the plaque at the show it just says "2000 Nissan Maxima, Turbo, Eibach suspension, custom paint and interior."

They don't care if it has a working VIAS, in fact, they probably had no idea what the hell it did. I'm sure they just swapped in a VQ30DE from a 4th gen to get it to work with the JWT ECU. Obviously if they were putting down such crappy numbers with a turbo, they weren't trying very hard to tune it either.

This is the sad life of a maxima enthusiast. Aftermarket could care less about us. Of course, an RSX gets a full complement of parts, 6 months before they hit the dealerships...
