B&M STS Installed

I got the B&M STS installed on my 01 SE. First impression are:

POSTIVE:
- a lot shorter throw than stock shifter
- shorter stick, feels more sportier
- shifts happen very fast
- looks good with my Momo Combat shift **** and 03 TE shift console

NEGATIVE:
- very notchy, harder to shift than stock shifter
- somewhat off center, when in 2nd or 4th, looks like it's in neutral

Overall I'm happy with it and hopefully it will loosen up with use. Thanks to maxdrvr847(Josh) for installing it for me.

Your negatives were exactly how mines were.. It'll get softer overtime.. Also switch to redline synthetic tranny fluid. It'll be a lil smoother from that too.

Yeah switching to redline fluid would be a good idea, that is what is in mine. let me know

I did send my B&M back, just cause I would prefer having an intake right now over a short shifter.

Keep in mind that Redline tranny fluid is not compatiable with the bronze syncros.

Please educate an newbee, what are bronze syncros? Would a stock 2001 SE 5spd have them?

Also will 5 quarts be enough if I get the transmission flushed out?

Thanks in advance.

Man, I'm having a hard time finding regular GL-4 tranny oil locally. It seems everyone carries either GL-5 or stuff that is GL-3,4,5 rated which I'm not sure is safe.

It will get much smoother over time. I didn't even change to Redline and it's now smoother or just as smooth as before.

It's my understanding that there is a coating on the syncronizers that is not compatiable with Redline tranny fluid. The fluid ends up eating the coating which then accelerates syncronizer wear.

If this is true, it's a serious problem that should be addressed. I think a lot of people (including myself) run redline mt-90.

It's also to my understanding that Redline MT-90 is fine because it's GL-4. Plz cite your sources because I'm thinking of getting 5 bottles of that stuff.

Redline info

http://www.redlineoil.com/frames/mtlti.htm

Redline MT-90 IS safe for yellow metal synchros.

One alternative may be GM/Pennzoil Synchromesh gear oil which according to their literature is also yellow metal friendly, something GL-5 gear oils are not. To many, this is kind of a "mystery" oil--some have tried it and swear by it, some avoid it because they don't even give a viscosity rating. Normally, some $11/qt at GM dealers, you can also buy a 5-gal bucket at oil-store.com for only $72. You can also get regular Pennzoil 80W90 GL-4 tranny oil in a 5-gal bucket for only $31. (S/H ~$12) 5 GALLONS people!
