I think that Jeff92SE is the VTC master. E-mail him.

There really isn't any way of predicting when they are going to fail. I had over 100K on my 93 before the VTC sprockets went bad. I can tell you that the sprockets will fail a lot faster if the tech that replaced them didn't clean out the oil gallies leading to the VTC assembly. (this is the reason they fail in the first place) I was told by several 3rd generation owners that nissan manufactured a special oil filter for the VE engine to help with this problem. I'm not quite sure if this is accurate as I always had the oil changed at my local shop. I suggest always using high quality oil, OEM filters and changing them religiously every 3000 miles. If you are like me, spending $2500 to replace VTC sprockets is something you don't want to do very often. check in the 3rd gen forum for more detail.

I believe...

..someone mentioned you can get upgraded VTC assemblies which are stronger or less likely to fail or something like that....
Oh man, I am so terrified being broke and not having to face the VTCs (YET!) and I just hit 100k miles on my max! damn, i need to dispose of this car as soon as I get $$$$$$$$$$$$$.......

when the sprockets fail, hopefully they don't, you will still be able to drive the car normally. you just won't get the variable timing. actually some people have modded their VE to completely bypass the VTC assembly.
