fuel filter
i put on a new nissan fuel filter. i had called up the dealer to get a price, he said 8.95, buy 1 and get 2nd one for half price. so i thought that was a good deal, since pep boys wanted 13.95 for a puralator fuel filter. so i went over to get it, and he said i thought you were talking about a oil filter. i said well you have to give me the fuel filter for the same price you quoted me on the phone. so he says, my boss said i could give it to you for 13.00 since he told me that. he said regular price was over 20 dollars. it seems to me all small parts cost about 23.00 at the dealer. well anyway, i installed it and it went pretty well. for those that don't know how to do this, you take out the fuel filter fuse, then start the car, and the fuel will run out, and the car will stall. continue to start the engine till it won't start anymore. it takes about 5 minutes. disconnect the negative battery terminal. then loosen the hose clamps(2), to the fuel filter.(drivers side, fire wall.)some fuel will come out of the filter so have a rag. the filter is in a bracket, and you can pull it out for better access. just install the filter the right way, and reverse this procedure. the fuel filter should be replaced at every 30k miles or every 2 years. most reading this already know about this. there was small dirt particles in the old filter, but the fuel seemed to be pretty clear, at 38k miles. im out.
Courtesy sells OEM Nissan fuel filters (although they are made in USA unlike the filter that came from the factory) for $11.89. The part number is 164000M200(a32). I'm not surprised your dealer wanted over $20 for the part. My closest dealership (Michael Jordan's RPM Nissan in Durham, NC) also tries to rip off its customers on both parts and labor. I guess that's just the way it is.
I also changed out my filter last weekend. It was a PITA as everyone has warned, although I don't have ABS so I had a little room to work with. The old filter was essentially clean; the fuel that came out of it if I held it upside down was only slightly dark. No black sludge. I didn't notice a performance difference after the swap. I have a '97 with 52k miles.

Mine made a differance
I replaced mine and it made a differance in performance, I also replaced the PCV valve, My car was a little sluggish before and now it's fine, I also need to do the belts and plugs so I can complete the 60k service without paying $300 bucks at the dealer. Oh and all of you should use Mobil 1 oil I put that in my car and it made a hell of a differance in the smoothness of the engine.
5 min.

Sleeper, you must not have ABS, I took a good look under my hood, and no way is it going to take 5 minutes! The top fuel connector is pretty easy to access, but the bottom one is almost inaccesible due to the ABS plumbing. Too bad it wasn't designed like the 3rd gens, as those are really easy to do. For those that have ABS, any ideas to do this or should I just pay the dealer to do it? I already have a new OEM fuel filter ready to go.
