valentine radar

i was just wondering if ther was a big difference between the v1 1.7 and 1.8 detection wise. are the 1.7s still as effective or are they pretty much obsolete by now. thanks

1.8 Detects Pop - I sold my 1.7 and bought a 1.8 the day they came out. The 1.7 still works but will not detect Pop so make the decision for yourself based on your local cops.

I have a 70 dollar whistler and it works perfect for me, don't know why you guys spend so much money on radars.

can someone post pics of their V1 mounted? it seems rather large, and the website suggests mounting it high...

mouting it as high as possible ensures u get maximum range out of it. based on radartest.com's reviews the valentine and 8500 are in the top 3 along with a bell radar of sorts.

ok im not questioning whether or not valentines are great. i was wondering if i should invest in a valentine 1.7 when 1.8 is out. is there a huge difference? is the 1.7 still as effective as the v 1.8?

to my understanding the V1 radars are upgradeable via software. cant you purchase a 1.7 unit and have it upgraded to 1.8?

you can, but I think it's like $100-$150 to upgrade so if you're buying one it's probably a better bet to buy the new 1.8

since the upgrade from 1.7 to 1.8 was so small (only pop) the upgrade charge is significantly reduced. I think it was like around 50 bucks when I checked online to see how much it would be to upgrade my 1.7.

when they moved from 1.7 to 1.8 i believe the overall case became smaller. to upgrade to 1.8 it would be almost the cost of a new unit.

1.7 is fine for NYC use. at this time i do not think NYPD and local state troopers use POP as detection. so to answer your question 1.7 is fine...you can get it.

Here's how I have mine mounted. I had it lower on the windshield for a few weeks before I put it behind the tint band and it doesn't seem to reduce range being there. I still pick up the usual false alerts at the exact same spots. The only bad thing is that you cant put the passanger visor too far forward or it will hit the radar detector. Plus it is very hard to see that I have a radar detector from outside the car. I don't worry about police seeing it or anyone passing by my parked car seeing it either. This thing has saved me so many times. Usually only when Im running late and speeding or late at night when cops are parked on the side of the road.

Do this and Valentine1.com will tell you that the 1.8 is slightly better in Ka and the unit itself is much smaller but he says that it is not worth upgrading. It is only $100 - $150 to upgrade. I have a 1.8, but my friend h2kfrosty has a 1.7 that he bought in 2000 and it is about the same. They are both amazing radar detectors. If you are buying a new one then just go ahead and get the 1.8, but if you have a 1.7 now then don't worry about it too much. Whenever they come out with a 1.9 then we will see.

BTW this is kind of for the general forum.
