starting up old junkyard engine

I tried searching for the info I needed but just couldnt come up with it. I just bought a junkyard motor with 7k miles which has been sitting for a while, over a year. My motor went so I will be swapping this one in. Is there anything I have to do before I try to crank it for the first time? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Not that I know of. As long as there are new fluids in, it should start up after a few cranks. Mayber after 10-20turns.

I have heard of some people putting a little oil on top of each cylinder before they install the spark plugs.

On my junkyard engine, the first startup it ran like crap, but after a few minutes of idleing it began running alot smoother and now after puttong on 3k miles it runs perfect.

Once it's started, let it idle for awhile, like your breaking in a new engine. and everything else people have said, fluids would be my biggest concern.

It was a good deal, 7k miles for about $550 w/ tax. Had to drive about a little over 1.5 hours but it was worth it.

Is it a good idea to put the oil on top of the cylinders? Anyone try it?

Well according to Carfax, the donor car was involved in an accident 6 months prior to the date I checked it... so 6 months roughly?

If your going to do that you need to take out all plugs, make sure there is no fuel running to the system and add just a few drops to each cylinder, maybe a teaspoon. Once that's done let it sit for maybe 5-10 mins and let her crank to blow the remaining oil from the cylinders, keep a towel on hand to promptly clean up any blow out. That should be fine if that's the route your going to take. I would also change the current oil with new (if there's any in there) before this is done, and then change again maybe 100-200 miles after initial drive. Cheers.

Thank you for the instructions. I just want to be very careful when starting it up for the first time. The engine has been sitting for more then a year so I just want to prevent any damage from occuring on the first crank.

Why did your old engine die? Mileage? Are you just going with a vq30de, or are you venturing into a vq30de-k or even a vq35?

I was on my way to work one morning and went through a flooded road, it was only deep on one side so it didnt really look flooded. When I went through it stalled and my battery shorted out. I pushed it into my work parking lot since it happened right down the street. I pulled all the plugs, saw there was a good amount of water in cylinder one. The car sat for 2 days and I tried to get as much water out as possible. When i started it up it had valve tap, probably bent a valve. I drove it home which is a half hour away and it was fine. The next day I started it, it idled for about 2 min then it sounded like it ate the valve and then a rod/piston cracked my block/upper oil pan The engine has 105k on it so im not really that mad.

I would love to do a VQ35 swap but Im not sure exactly what im getting into and it might be too difficult. I decided to go with a DE-K motor. Theres some things that im confused about but hopefully I can figure it out.

Keep us posted on the DE-K swap and how it goes, and any difficulties you run into. I would love to know if its pretty much an easy drop and crank.

Hell meng, that VI should feel like a champ, so don't feel too bad about not going the 3.5 route. Good luck with any complications that may happen

Yea If I recall correctly you were posting in a thread where you needed to replace your engine, and you were thinking about the VQ35 but didnt want the down time etc. How'd the DE-K go? hows it running?

I just took the motor out today so the DE-K motor is not in yet. Im done for now, its way too hot out to do anything else. Ill take a bunch of pictures during the swap for the other people looking to do it. I ended up having a lot more downtime then I wanted, insurance covered my hydrolocked motor so I just got the car back a few days ago.

leakdown and compression tests and you should be fine. That's not a pic of the oil pan from the new motor is it? If so... ouch.

I agree. But the bad thing is you have to get the engine installed in order to perform the tests. Unless you can secure and rig it to turn over on a stand etc...

That oil pan with the rod in it is my old motor. I wont be able to do those tests so I will just make sure all the fluids are there and do the oil on top of the cylinders to make sure I dont cause any damage on the first crank. Hopefully eveything goes how it should.
