Ok so I'm driving down the freeway tonight doing about 70-75 and up from underneath the car in front of me comes a tire. Not a little piece that was shredded off but the entire tire. Luckily there was no rim in it because it hit the front end of my car and bounced up over my car. I had no time to react/swerve/duck or whatever.
The damage: Busted Grill and headlight housing...a tiny dent in the top of my hood and the edge of my hood right above my grill...actually if you look at my car you can't tell because we took polishing compound and rubbed the tread marks off my hood and took twisty ties to hold my grill to the bar that runs along the top of the radiator.
I shoud consider myself lucky considering what could have happened.....
I just wanted to share

Very fortunate, it could have gone through the windshield, sounds like it just missed. I swerved to miss a rolling hubcap the other day. Glad I had the FSTB.

How did the tire came off the other car anyway? Did you from underneath the other car? That's weird. Anyway, did you went after that car, assuming the tire came from that car, to make the driver pay for the damages? Glad that you were not hurt.

Sorry to hear it. Will this come in under your deductible for comprehensive, or will insurance help you at least a little bit? If you get the grill replaced, get the SE grill. At least get something out of this whole thing.

Sarah...

I'm glad you're ok and damage was considerably minimal *whew*. Some things are just plain unavoidable.

thanks everyone for your thoughts...my first reaction was that i was glad it didn't go through my windshield cause my carpooler and I would have been seriously hurt and i probably would have crashed my car.

Cumalot: the tire came off a 4runner that was a couple of miles up the road on a flat bed tow truck already...it looked like it rolled

97MaxGurl...damn what happened to your car?! sorry i haven't really read any posts lately...that' sucks..i hope you get your car fixed and hope your ok.

Weasel....how is the SE grill differnet from the GXE grill?? i havent really paid attention...i like my chrome grill...i gotta find another will only the grills from the 97-99 fit? i just want to make sure....( i dont want a 95-96 grill..i dont like those) i just want to see what years I can look for.
I'm not sure if i'm gonna turn it in to my ins. co. I have a $250 ded. If i can find the parts myself cheaper i can have my friends husband fix the grill and headlight holder...
Then i gotta find out how much it's gonna cost me to have my dent pulled out...there's some paintless dent repair place around here i gotta call.

The SE grill is body-colored, I personally prefer that look but if you like flossin' ThA ChRoMe by all means go for it.

You can probably find the grill and one headlight for less than $250. Try www.copartfinder.com. Since you're not looking for a specific body color it'll be easy to find a grill and headlight at a salvage yard close by.

OEM Grill Assembly

Ironically I ordered mine today...

Garrands Nissan , Plattsburgh NY
(advertises genuine Nissan Parts at 25% off list price.)
Quote line: 800-339-2922
$81.00 shipped, $15 more for the GXE (chrome finish)

I have a 97 GXE, had chrome grill like yours but decided to replace my damaged grill with the SE one (unpainted) and have the shop paint it to match the body.
Another alternative is to go to website like www.car-parts.com and look for a 'salvaged' grill assembly within listed local salvage yard database.

Good luck Sarah
