Yes a distributor is a mechanical device, so even if you have elctronic ignition, the timing must be set. However, if you are very careful and put the new piece in exactly like the old one, your timing won't change.

No it's not hard but you do have to be careful. It's been a long time since I did this as my VE doesn't have one. I don't know if the VG dist. are offset-keyed or not. Even if it's keyed, you can still get it 180 DEG out of phase(I think) If you are going to do something like this, I would strongly suggest you spend a few $$ on a cheap Chiltons or Haynes manual. Or a Nissan FSM if you can afford one.
