Help with UDP install

How do you release the tension on the belt that drives the power steering pump? I loosened the small bolt behind the pulley and then got at the other bolt that runs vertically from underneath but the pump does not move. What am I missing? Thanks

I did exactly what it says to do in that link but it doesn't work. There's got to be something else going on there.

Once you loosen the horizontal nut locking on to the vertical thread bolt then start to turn the bolt maybe the oposite of what you think. I remember turning and turning but nothing was happening. You need to actually tighten the vertical pump threaded bolt so that it will make the "C" shaped clamp smaller...that will lower the steering pump.

There is also a bolt that the pump pivots on that has to be loosened. IIRC, it is on the back side of the pump. I do remember that it is a PITA to get to. You have to crawl under the car and get to it from below.

Yup, I agree! I had the same problem. I would seem you should turn the tensioner hardware one way, when it actually goes the other way! I beleive you turn it to the right. Watch out for the threaded bolt walking out of the cheap set up!

uhm, I haven't looked at the 5spd's, but the way I did it was to get a big 3/4" impact gun (more power) with a deep socket and just grab the thing right off with the impact gun.

So are you saying that you have to force the vertical bolt up into the metal bracket that holds it until the whole bracket moves? Also, what's the deal with the bolt on the back of the pump? You guys that didn't mention it, were you able to move the pump without loosening that bolt?

Here is a pic of that pivot bolt from a '99 FSM. If you loosen the tensioner bolt and the pump doesn't move, you will have to loosen the pivot bolt.

Yup! If it dosn't move and prolly won't, loosen the bolt on the back of pump. I had to! Also, you'll be kinda feeling your way around rather than seeing it! When you loosen the bolt, just give it a half turn. No need to remove.
