Floor Jack Placement

Where do you place a floor jack (front and rear) to raise the car? I'm guessing the differential for the front, but what about the rear?

Read your owners manual.

If you want to raise a whole end at a time, use the crossmember under the engine for the front and the beam for the rear.

Ummmm...not the jack that came with the car...a floor jack. I don't think the owner's manual covers this.

same place still. The reason they tell you is because they also tell you not to do any type of repair or work other than changing a tire with the one they give you.

Dont use the jack up points for the factory jack. Any part of the car's frame will do just fine. The best jack up points are on the sides, a little bit behing the factory jack up points. You will notice a part of the frame with a small oval hole. This is the point.

Look at the service manual, the biggie book.

You can jack the rear using the cross bar (U shapped thing).
The front, there is a nub in the center just front of the engine.

I would do a whole lot of work under a floor jack, use stands to do any real work.

I STORONGLY DISAGREE!! Use jack stands ANYTIME you do work under the car, even if it is for 5 seconds. Ask yourself, is the 1 minute you save setting up the jack stands worth risking a 3000lb car sitting on our chest?

Sinewave, bravo! I totally agree and don't forget to chock the wheels. I didn't chock them one time and almost had a BMW crush me. At least if I was gonna get killed, it's a sweet ride . Now, if i'm going under, I double up the jacks as backup. I don't want the kids to get all my cheddar before I can spend it all...

Be careful

A friend of mine lifted the rear end of his Maxima to install a trailer hinch for his jet ski. After lifting he rested the car on blocks. His mom backed the car into his which caused the car to fall. Even though the car was on wheels, it crushed him! He had broken hips, spine and legs. Couldn't walk for five months. To this day he uses crotches to get around! All because he didn't secure the car before working on it. After that I make sure the car will not fall on me because it's no joke!

wow...mis-type.
I meant to say, use jack stands, and NOT a floor jack to do work.
Sorry....

That little nub is the perfect place for the jack. The rear axle does flex a little and if you have a RSB, you will have to put a spacer between the RSB and the axle.

that will work fine, your not going to be lifting the entire car at once. if your jacking up the front just put it under the cross member that goes under the engine (front to back)

Wow, SEARCH!!! No one can stress that enough. If you search, there's another thread on this where irish44j posted pics of the nub for the front.

If your radiator core support is shot you may not want to use the nub.

The picture links going to be fixed on this website soon?

Every time I see a reference to where to jack my 2001 maxima, the pictures are not available.

like mzmtg said, the cross member for the front, and the rear beam for the back. If your radiator support is shot, then get that fixed first, then use the crossmember to jack it up.

Thanks, but I was wondering where most of the pictures went.

For example, where to place the jack on the rear beam.... It is shaped like an upside down U and I was concerned with it twisting, as the floor jack pan does not hit the bottom two edges evenly. the bottom is recessed.

How do I know my radiator is at risk? the front crossmember looks ok, does it rust out and pop through to the radiator?.

Anyone find the vaporware Nissan pads?

Thanks.

Guys, first off I want to say - DONT EVER GET UNDER A CAR SUPPORTED BY ONLY A JACK - people have been killed this way!

It only takes a few extra seconds (and dollars) to put jackstands under the car, and lower the car onto them. After that, I usually go "cow tippin" (ie, I put my shoulder into the car and push) The car shouldnt budge. This gives you increased security/piece of mind that the car wont fall on you. I then usually slide the tires right behind the jack stands, just in case one were to fail, the car would fall on the tire/rim and not me.

I usually jack the car by the front "nub", and put jack stands where they specify in the FSM. As for the rear axle, I have jacked on it, but it always scares me that it flexes so much, and makes me wonder if I should put a spacer between the jack and axle to even out the load.
