My impressions after the first week with a 2002

After nine days and 300 miles with my 2002 SE 6-speed, I have a few impressions to pass along. I have previously owned a '91, '95, and '98, all SE 5-speeds. First off, this is one fast car! Once the revs are above 2000, the power surge will firmly push you into the seat, and 80 will arrive before fourth gear. The shifter is not as rubbery as my '98, and missing gears under hard acceleration is a thing of the past. Sixth gear is great for the freeway, but not desirable for driving under 40, the revs are too low. I have not had the chance to take it out on winding roads yet for handling and braking, but so far both are up to par.

Now for the complaints. Electronic throttles are the worst evolutionary step in automotive history!!! I want my throttle cables back! There is a noticeable delay when the accelerator is released for the engine to wind down. This delay is about .5-1 second. I have found that I can shift gears before the engine has a chance to reduce revs. I know that some benefits are to be gained, but a little more responsiveness would be appreciated. Second, the tires. I had the misfortune of blowing one out the second day. Bridgestone makes nice tires, unfortunately they are almost impossible to find in my city, and cost $200 a pop. Very few makers currently deal in the size 225/50 R17, and I hope that changes in the next year.

Should the throttle hang that long between shifts ??? Anyone else with the 6 speed 2002 want to chime in? The computer should be able to react quite quickly, so either there is a malfunction or the computer is programmed to do this on purpose. Why? I don't know. It seems that some other car with electronic throttle did this and they finally released a TSB to reprogram the ECU because people complained. I think it had to do with emissions or something.

As far as those RE92s - yep, it's a conspiracy. Bridgestone makes a wierd tire size, then sells them to Nissan for a lower price so that they use them on their new car, then you have to get the exact same tire for replacement, even though they suck.

And they do suck.

Bad.

Real bad.

I drove a BMW 330 with the same throttle problem. In that case I stalled it three times because it lags on the rev up. This immediately turned me off to that particular model. I have an 2000 M5 which does not do this. The Max is the daily driver.

I put a set of Continental CH95's on my '98 SE after the Toyos went south after 25k. I believe the set cost me about $400. While the name does not sound inspiring, they far outperformed the Toyos, Goodyear RSAs, and Yokohama 509s that I have had on previous cars. If they came in the right size, I would have gladly unloaded the Bridgestones in a flash.

My 02 6spd does not seem to have this problem. Only disturbing thing I notcied on my car is for the first 100 miles the car shook when it came to a stop, the problem went away though.

Thx

nice

You are REALLY a maxima fan. I'm only on my 2nd one so far.

Glad you like the car.

BTW, Yes. M5 = nice.

can there be anything more beautiful?

However, the 2k2 Max is a great bang for the buck, as a sports sedan....

The Germans were first with the "throttle by wire", introducing it on several BMW, Audi and VW models in the late '90's. My '99 Jetta had it, and the delay was really annoying. You could get a chip upgrade to fix it, but c'mon, I expect better from the factory.

The M5 has throttle by wire, too - apparently they got it right on that model.

P.S. I'm jealous of your M5, too - maybe someday

The Focus suposedly has the "hanging throttle" situation as well. Has something to do with emissions. But if Emax doesn't have it, yours might have a problem.

Oh yeah, I drool over M5's as well.

I think mine actual does have it . I paid attention the other day and noticed when I pushed the clutch pedal in the RPM's would hang there for a second. Funny thing is, is when I put the car in nuetral using the shifter rather then the clutch the rpm's do not hang, stange indeed.

For THREE TIMES the price of a Maxima, it should. It should also come with a female escort for the week.

OK then, I vote for an emissions reducing technique by Nissan.

Go Nissan!

yea Throttle by wire (electronic throttles) may have a delay... I used to drive large trucks with cummins Diesels and well, it had electronic throttle and it had a slight delay, I think that's how it is and once you're used to it it might work better... I'm not sure, As for the truck, I didn't mind it. I think I just got used to it. And as for Potenzas on our Maxes, well they may suck, but they last a while. I'm at 31 thousand miles today (1yr4mon) and I think I can get another 25 at least on these tires. I'm a sensible driver for the most part, but I play once in a while.
