good read... involves turbos!

hey i just stumbled upon this board today much to my surprise!! i too own a 1985 Maxima SE 5spd. i also own a 1986 300zx that i am selling this summer. now here is the clincher. last summmer i went and bought the entire drivetrain from a 1987 300zx turbo, i had planned on swapping it into my n/a 86. but now that idea is defunct and i will be selling the Z as is. in nice OEM condition. but now i have an 85 Maxima with 218K on it. and a VG30ET in my garage with 90K or so on it. guess where i want that engine to end up? yeah. but i have a few questions. does any of the OEM plumbing work? what i mean is, do i have to have some custom pipe bending done? be that it IS setup for a RWD car. and would i need a new front crossmember? and most importantly, is the maxima tranny up to taking all of the torque abuse that a turbo engine can dish out so readily. especially since i'm one of those guys whos mod list is NEVER long enough. seriously guys, i would REALLY like to take this car to the street drags this summer, please help me make it happen and refer me to people that have done this swap.

ps-sorry for asking, i bet the first thing most people ask when they find this board is "how much for turbo, garr!" but hey, help the rookie out anyways OK?

Please.

This ranks up there with "I can twin turbo my 4th gen for only $300!"

Re: good read... involves turbos!

I have no idea what the poster is asking,(I hate reading long *** posts ) but hes aksing if you can put the turbo z31 motor in the 2nd gen, then yes you can, is it difficult some what.....BUT it might just be easier to swap the manifolds and turbo and make custom piping! VG compression is 9:1 so the ability to safely boost the engine(to an extent) is all there! This swap has been done in the 3rd gen before, by mounting the engine trnasversely, so YES the total swap is VERY possible! BTW it be much faster than any 4th gen without an SC!

I think you should read the post again. His talking about 2nd gen from older Z. The swap is possible. That 2nd Gen will woop all 4th and 5th gens when ready.

its not the fact that they constantly keep asking these "extreme" questions its the fact that most of the time they do no prior research about the topic and just come on here expecting to be taught EVERYTHING in 5 minutes....if a guy comes on here and knows what he's asking or with some background on the subject then its all good, but yeah come on here with the traditional "how do I turbo my Max??"(and nothing more in the message) and you deserve a flaming!!!

Whoa! Back up the truck! This guy didn't ask anything outrageously stupid, like that kid that said he wanted over 300 hp without spending any money.. He obviously HAS done some research, because he stated the engine codes and other info that only knowledgable enthusiasts can rattle off. He just has far more experience with the 300zx than with the Maxima. Is that a sin? Not since the last time I checked! He didn't ask how to turbo his Max; He asked a simple question about piping, for God's sake! Cut him some slack and answer his freakin question! I think everyone around here is getting a bit snippy! Can't we all just get a bong? Uh...I mean "along"...

Exactly ... people have to learn to read before they lump all newbies/lurkers together.

thanks for ths support crusher84

yeah, i didn't mean to push anyones buttons the wrong way. i used the search funtion and found a lot of answers, along with more questions (of course). but... i still would like to know how much torque the tranny can safely (or not) take. the tranny does not have 218k on it. it was rebuilt some unknown thousand(s) of miles ago.
