Th pilot bearing is what the clutch master slave piston shaft pushes against to disengauge the pressure plate from the flywheel.

The Clutch Slave Cylinder Piston Shaft doesn't spin, your pressure plate does, thus you need a bearing to push up against. When the bearing goes bad, it squeals when you depress your clutch.

Another name for this is a throw out bearings.

The pilot bushing is not the throwout bearing. The throwout is what pushes the clutch in and out as you engage and disengage. The pilot bushing is at the end of the tranny shaft. It sticks into the flyweel hole and keeps the shaft centered. I can only assume that if you didn't have it, your shaft would flop around and wear out your tranny's bushings/seals/bearings.

now we're goin somewhere...but the shaft on the tranny does not look like the clutch alignment tool...only thing that is the same is the teeth...the clutch alignment tool slide rite into the pilot bushing but the tranny's shaft only has teeth no smooth part like the alignment tool...
