Hypertronic CVT M-6 Shed some light please tranny gods.

So how come in the states we don't have this transmission? It's still and automagic, but I heard in the European version of the g20 it's a beast of a transmission.

IT's suppose to have two variable diameter pulleys connected by a high precision segmented steel belt. It is enganged via torque convertor, making no drive reaching the pulleys until the power is applied. It's suppose to reduce the amounts of internal friction and slippage therefore reducing fuel consumption.

So why not have in the in the maxima in the states?

Thought?

I'm not positive on this, but I imagine their is more demand for such features in Europe because of the high cost of gas. Also, I believe that the cars its available on have lower output then our cars, because the power handiling of the CVT's isn't up to plain old saw tooths.

Americans don't like the feel of a CVT (the sound is similar to a jet, not loud, but when you step on it it just goes to one RPM then stays there; and driving one after years of single ratio gears make you think something is slipping in the car)

But, the 2003 Murano, which is based off the Altima, will have a CVT and a 240HP VQ engine, so I imagine it won't be long before we see it in a Maxima.

We do have it. Only like 2 cars have it though, but I forget which models. Time to ask the pops, he read about it and told me which ones did. I do know that Nissan is coming out with one in a SUV.

Oh...
I was just reading past articles about the maxima and SCC had an article about the maxima and how awsome it would be if it used this system.

I was just curious.

I think its a real expensive system. So it may not be cost effective yet to put it on alot of cars.

i test drove a new Audi A4 that had a CVT, and it's WEIRD but i wouldn't say i didn't like it - one big gear, rpm just climbing and dropping with no gear shifts, no engine going real loud, then quieting down again when the car upshifts, or vice versa

i imagine a CVT must be better on the engine than a transmission with gears because there's never a real dramatic change in engine speed, it's all smooth, and it's gotta be putting more power to the ground than a traditional automatic too because it's always in the right 'gear'

but do CVT's have torque converters? so a manual transmission is still faster?

Didn't the Civic HX have it?

My wife used to have a CVT Trans in her 1997 Civic HX.
It's pretty neat to floor it and have the RPMs stay at the redline until you let off all the while the cars accelerating WOT.
If they could make them STRONG enough...slap one on a turbo/sc car and FORGET about lag!

CVT's either have a small torque converter or a wet clutch pack I believe. The newer ones usually have wet clutches. There lockup speed is rather low, so the slippage is just long enough to let the CVT do its thing. I believe the A4 was .1 sec. slower in the quater mile in CVT form as opposed to a manual, but thats not too shabby, especialy considering the age of CVT's.

CVT tranny is GOD

it is the best tranny it give u the best MPG, most HP for acceloration, and more

Nissan has great CVT's in Japan, many are with the VQ

i think the next max should have this and a 6-speed

Anyone else?
I think this tranny would be killer with a s/c or turbo

CVT Info: Yea, the Murano will have one and It has a really cool feature.

Early, small motor cvt(civic hx) use a belt that goes between two pulleys. They work well, but only can handle low torque. My buddy had an HX. They put the wrong fluid in it, and on a road trip from Buffalo to New Orleans, it died in Ohio.

Murano CVT: Nissan cvt's use a more advance hydrualic system, that I can't quite describe, but I know can handle lots of torque. The mate it to the cedric or gloria in Japan with a Turbo VQ. Here this fall the Muran will have that cvt with a 7 speed option. Basically its 7 "pre-set gear ratios". SO, you can either let it do its thing or drive it like a Tiptronic auto. Pretty cool eh.

the advantage of a CVT for performance is that it can find the best point in the rev range for acceleration and STAY there, no shifting, no worrying about shift points. just floor it and watch the revs stay at like 5.5k.
