you can take all of your mods out as long as you replace it with a stock part where there needs to be... you can do this for free

If i have mods on the car that i want off when its totaled im takin them off im not even replacing the stock parts. Its my car, i totaled it, my responsibility, screw you im getting my stuff off it...think of it this way youre allowed to go back to the car to remove your "personal belongings" right, so technically a mod that you put on is one of your "personal belongings"

I had about 1.5k worth of audio in my accord when it was totaled. I lived on campus at the time and the campus police wouldnt let me park it back in a school lot so it went to the wrecking co's lot to await the dammage report. They were complete *****'s about leting me get to the car after they called it totaled. When they finally let me back to get my "personal" items out I had a field day getting my stuff out. I ripped the door pannels right off to get my speakers and used what ever means nessesary to get my amp's, sub, and head unit out as quick as possible before they came back to check on me. If I am ever in the situation where I think my car's totaled im not going to let them take my car anywhere but back to my house.

get to the car quick cuz the people there will jack shiet

a built motor will probably have to remain unless you can take everything off that you replaced.... but i think the usually want you to put he stock stuff back or they wont let you take it

If you've got enough money invested in the car in custom parts that you can't remove evertying in a couple of hours, then you should keep your mouth shut on the mods (other than you want to make sure the car is secure and will NOT be gone through by the lot) then you need to buy it back from the insurance company, have it towed home, and then take your time pulling everything off. if you have to have it towed to a mini-storage and pay rent on it for a month, that $40-100 is more than enough to offset the losses in the parts on the car.

when you've got everything pulled off of it, then you can sell it to a rebuilder, salvage yard, or simply part it out yourself.

When I totalled mine, I tried to pull the parts off at the lot, but there jsut wasn't enough time to do anything. they were more than willing to let me do it (because I told the insurance adjustor that I had a lot of custom parts I wanted to remove- with stock parts to put back in it)
Sooo, we settled on the claim and I bought the car back and towed it home. a year later, it's still sitting in a friend's driveway in 1000 pieces.. but I got all my mods off of it and sold enough in parts to make up for the money I lost buying it back.

Insurance company's view on things. To add to Matt's excellent comments. If the insurance company totals the car, they will be paying you for that car. So it's their car now. Thus technically you shouldn't be taking stuff off. But you say you have mods that the insurance company is not gonna pay you for. Well the insurance company's view is that you should have paid for an extra rider that accounts for your mods. But some insurance companies will account for some mods I think. To what extent, I don't know. So if you have let's say lots of engine/suspension mods that isn't easy to take off, you are going to have to take Matt's suggestion and buy the car back. Ususally it's pretty cheap to do that though(ie.. 20% of the insured value or something)

20% of the insured value? I have up to 3/4 of a million dollars in coverage on our policy. Due to the fact we own a house, and if I smash into a ferrari, the guy cant sue the crap out of me and take my house.

Ah what? 20% of the insured value of the car in question. So if the replacement cost of your car is $10,000, it might take $2000 to buy it back. Or something like that. It depends on how damaged it is too I think. ie.. if it's totalled and the repair costs are $8000, they might take $1600 to buy it back. Of course the % probably very negotiable.

*sigh of relief* Ok, so if my KBB is around $5k they will give me $5k and then I can buy it back for $1k? If so, I am off to wreck my car. J/P I hope it never happens, but I have something else up my sleeve. I guess I should start another thread about the next questions, but here it is... What if the car is mysteriously stolen *Not Mine* and is found totally stripped down...OMG...Does it work the same way?

Oh boy Donald. I hope you're not thinking of that old tired insurance fraud trick are you? Strip, stolen, buy back cheap, put parts back on. Some Russian and Asian gangs are WAY ahead of you in that regard.

Of course I'm not gonna tell you how it works! But it's highly illegal and your idea is not that unique. Meaning, it wouldn't be that difficult to get CAUGHT.

Damn, your right, it is probably not worth it I guess my main concern/question in this thread was, I plan on keeping my car FOREVER, and I am going to dump an awful lot of money into it, but if some A**hole slams into it, or I slip up and wreck it, I dont want to get shanked hard.

bwuhahahaha.lol. I was thinking of keeping all of the striped parts, engine, trans, etc...and then having them pay me for the car, and they can keep it, I get cash and what I want, but that is stupid. I am talking out of my bung hole. I am staying out of jail. I just am concerned about my prior posts question. That is all.

fraud...

A few years back my uncle ended up getting a '78 Vette due to the fact that some kid was trying to do a little insurance fraud.

The kid had the car, but didn't want it. So he decided to report it stolen to the police and collect the insurance. Simple enough, right? Well the problem (for the kid) is that he got greedy. He had abandoned the car in the woods, stripped the wheels, stereo and a few other parts off the car. Then he proceeded to beat the hell out of it with a bat. All was fine and dandy until the insurance company started doing a little investigating. Seems they found the tires, stereo and the bat the kid had used sitting in his garage.

My uncle (who owns and auto body shop) bought the car for $1000, put about $2000 in parts (plus his own time) and sold the car for $12k. Not too shabby.

That kid must of been a idiot. You never bring anything illegal into your house. In order to successfully get away with any crime, you must think like an investigator/cop. When I was arrested, wont say why, they never found anything in my house! that is how I got off. I was one step ahead of them. What do you guys think about my real question?
