The one for automatic is available, just that no one has ordered one yet. Can only test if someone buys!

Intercooler for your turbo project

I know this should be in "For Sale" section... but I have an Intercooler off Mistubishi Starion (Very compact, light and one of the best around for you turbo project, in excellent shape).
Just been cleaned and presure tested (could hold up to 20 psi).
$200 shipped and it's yours. henrikgal@aol.com

Checking Engine Compression

Check your compression first. If your compression is already low, don't bother with the kit until you fix your engine. If it is OK then you should be OK with the kit.
Could a knowledgable sole please give us some info on checking the engine compression? can I do this or must I goto a shop?

Thanks!

SafeGuard Group Deal

If your going to boost it up you should consider some protection. Heres a link to the group deal on the J&S Electronics Ultra SafeGuard Ignition Controller.

Length of offer?

Holy charbroiled tires Phatman! It's a turbo for the 4th gen!

How awesome, so nearly a year ago I get my first car...a cosmetically banged up 1997 Maxima GXE AT. I was tired of all my buddies with their Hondas and Acuras. I wanted something with more leg room...and NISSAN (I wish I was a millionaire to buy a 2003 GT-R concept off of Nissan Japan). Back to my story...I got the car and saw that not many shops take interest in these really awesome cars. So now I find everything here. All of you turbo guys really kick a$$, seriously.

So I'm close to getting a really nice paying job, and since i live in a house left to me by my parents, my saving abilities are really high. I'm mostly a body work kind of guy so I have little time to learn a lot about engines. All I know is that I want turbo on my AT and for sure should have enough cash by Christmas (at the longest). Hell, I might even drive from L.A. to Colorado with some buddies to get the sucker put in my car.

For planning needs: For how long will PFI offer turbos for the 4th gen Maxima?

Thanks!

Re: Instructions

Anyone other than Nigel have the kit yet? Im seriously looking into buying it. I would like to purchase very soon (in the next month or so), but i dont want to be a guinea pig. Whats the deal with the Y-pipe modification (exhaust return to the turbo)? Is it something i can do myself, or do i have to send in my pipe and have nigel modify it for me? FMIC would also be a must for me because i live in Texas, and it gets hotter than a **** here. I would like a little more info on that too. Just looking for more info and input on this kit before i dish out $4K.

Thanks,
ryan

Hehehe, Actually an electical engineer from Austin is coming down tomorrow to look at my car. Have you ever heard of Todd King? I think he might work mostly on domestics. So if he gets my car running right then you might be right that Austin Ownz.

does anyone know about the Y-Pipe mod? If necessary i could have one prefabricated to fit your kit. No offense, but i dont want someone tearing up my pipe. I dont want to ship it off if its just going to get bent all to hell, and not even be mendrel anymore. (Not flaming here, just need info. Sorry nigel if i keep bothering you about this).

Hmm! Why can they not PM me? Are they afraid?

Yes, I intend on making the meet on the 6th. Why?

By the way, I intend to dyno my car again in a couple of days at 12 psi. I haven't replaced the clutch yet, but if I keep it cool, it should be OK!

I noticed on unclemax's car the battery had to be relocated to the trunk. Is it popssible to just relocate to the passenger side of the engine bay if you don't get an intercooler?

I dunno

I was just wondering if you'd be there so we could talk in person. Chris has told me that he is still looking for a quieter muffler but cant find one that flows well enough for a turbo aplication.

Definatley keep us posted on that dyno!

Hmmm not sure if there's enough space. the IC piping is a lot smaller than a battery, That probably would be easier but I have no idea if it can be done. Has anyone looked at the space available?

battery relocation

If i have a system in my trunk (2 12" infinity kappa, 2 boss amps, 2 caps, and a sh*t load of wire with a cool little light) can i utilize any spot in the trunk? Or is there a "sweet spot" that i don't know about?

Hey guys

Sorry I have been out of the loop for as while. I have been really busy. Installed my clutch and flywheel a couple of days ago but there's a grinding noise on the driver's side I need to fix. Sorry I couldn't make the meet on Saturday.

Well, I have been busy on the turbo kits too! The orders have been coming faster than we can produce them. I've had to ask two people to hold back on payment because of this. We are trying to speed things up. Don't know why things are taking so long!

For those of you who are curious, 5 kits have been ordered. Two have gone out already. Three are in process and two I have had to ask not to pay yet cos I don't want to hold their money for so long when we are so far behind! The bottleneck is the piping primarily (of course). Once the next three go out, the process should be much better. The first five were custom fit to my car. The ones thereafter will be jigged (I hope).

I will not name any names, but you should see more turbo names on the org in the near future!

Kirk, I lost Chris' number about a month ago when I went away on business and forgot to contact him again after that. Please give him my apologies. I am still looking for a quieter muffler just had too much going on. Also please PM me his number again...thanks!

Yeah I'll be interested in seeing what others have to say about this kit. I mean not that I dont trust everything youve said. I just wanna get more opinions if you know what I mean.

Next question I might have missed this through all 26 pages of this. Will this kit work at all on a 2k or 2k1 5spd?

There will be one guy trying this on a 2K. I have told him that I can't guarantee that it will work. He seems pretty capable though so even if it doesn't fit, he'll figure it out.

I can understand wanting more people's opinions. I would feel the same way ... just hang tight.

Ok, so I have a 97 GXE AT....first off it doesn't seem like such a good idea to get the turbo on an auto tranny Max. So what I was thinking...instead of getting the 5spd swap...why not get an engine swap for the newer Max engines and a manual tranny to complement it? But in that event I'd want that turbo on my Max. Does any of this make sense?

Oh, and I'm thinking more about power gain than total money spent. I like the 4th gen more than the 5th though so getting the whole 5th gen SE is out of the question...it's just my loyalty to my 4th gen baby.

Instead of a complete swap of the new 3.5 I'd recommend u get a parts swap of the VQ30DET (270HP stock) and a manual transmission.. get a bigger turbo, a haltech ECU and exhaust done.. that'll give u the capacity to go around 400-500 horses with that setup. Once u get that far ur definatly going to need a quife.

Uh I wouldn't sugest Haltech. And for that matter any Stand alone system that reads it's timing between 60-100 BTDC. You guys have no idea what pain this engine management is becoming. Unfortunatley I really can't say much because I'm not sure my new tuner wants me to say much about it yet. And yea I had to get a new tuner cuz the last one got in over his head on this setup. It's defenitly not a Honda.

What exactly do you mean by that type of parts swap? Also, will Nigel's Turbo work with that setup?

I can understand your tuner wanting to keep it hush hush. So instead of asking you details about your setup, I'd want advice on finding a tuner of my own. What kind of places do you suggest? Or how did you go about finding your tuner? Are any other Turbo Maxima guys having the same (or any) engine management problems as well?

If you want to do any kind of engine management, I would look at AEM perhaps or Speedpro. AEM do stuff for Supras which have a similar coil over plug design and they are 6 cylinder (granted not V6), it should still work The new software combined with wideband O2 should make it tune itself! My opinion is don't put in engine management unless you have a lot of $$$ for tuning and a lot of time.

The turbo kit will work with pretty much any set up. The only thing I don't like about my turbo right now is bottom end response is average. I might start looking into sequential turbos! . They are messy though! not sure that I want to mess with a reliable set up right now.

Later ...

Yup you need a dedicated tuner and $$$ and time. I wouldn't suggest EM untill your ready to put you car in a shop for a while.
Unfortunatley Nigel Speedpro is gonna have the same timing issue. My new tuner is a Speedpro/Fast dealer and I was thinking of maybe swithcing over to speedpro but he said the way our timing is setup any EM is gonna have trouble with our cars without some modifications.

Hmm Is that because we are odd-fire engines? It really should not be an issue unless we are odd-fire. It should be straightforward. Just have to set up base fuel maps (which can be a pain)
