Clicking Noise When Turning At Low Speeds

Hey All,

My car has 160,000 kms (100,000 miles) and recently I have noticed a clicking noise when turning the steering wheel at low speeds, for example to park the car or make a U turn. It sounds a bit like when you run your hand along the wooden pales of a fence.

Has anyone experienced this? Any thoughts on possible causes?

Sounds like you have a bad strut bearing. Can't say for sure since this is an internet diagnosis. Could also be a wheel bearing, but I don't think so.

Does it keep clicking while you're not still turning the wheel but holding it at the same angle? If so it could also be a CV joint.

The strut bearing allows the front strut/spring to rotate when turning. Goes right under the strut mount. It is just a small circular plastic piece with bearing inside. What happens most of the time is the grease inside dries up not allowing the strut assembly to turn smoothly and the spring gets binded up causing a poping noise. Not much to it but the whole strut/spring assembly has to be disassembled to replace it.

If one indeed has a bad strut bearing it needs to be replaced. Sure the car will drive with it bad, but the car will run on 5 cylinders as well

Thanks for all the posts.

The noise does not continue if holding the steering wheel at the same angle.

I have Koni Yellow suspension, which as you all know, in the front is an insert. Perhaps it is a strut problem. In any case the noise is not severe.

How urgent a problem is this to fix and should i approach my suspension installers or the Stealer?
