One issue or two? You decide

I'll be driving my 2001 Infiniti I30, and all the sudden the engine will start racing and the transmission will act like it's not even there. I pull off to the side of the road to stop the car, turn off the engine, and hopefully reset the computer. The car will not start. I wait five minutes. The car starts after five minutes, and the transmission functions as normal… Until the next incident.

I should also add that occasionally I smell something burning, like possibly something electrical?

Any diagnoses, anyone? Is this one issue, or two separate issues? Any help is appreciated.

I'll see if I can get hold of a scanner. The check engine light isn't coming on, but I guess it could still throw a code without the light being on.

When the car doesn't start, is the starter cranking the engine over or is the starter not working?

It's completely dead. No starter, no radio, nothing. Then all of the sudden, power is restored in a few minutes.

The Infiniti is very similar to the maxima mechanically. you will find much more help and information if you would look for the maxima forum for your year.
