Band-aide fix for knocking?
Band-aide fix for knocking?
Anyone have any ideas on how I can get my car going with very little work? Lol.
Basically I just need it to move 30’ forward and back in order to retire it. The situation is:
- 2004 i35 with 288k miles.
- I did a dumb thing and thought one of those sludge removal additives before doing my last oil change would help cut down on oil consumption and instead I THINK what happened was it clogged the oil pump.
- a few weeks after it’s last oil change it started acting as though the transmission was slipping really bad, but when I would try to accelerate hard it would bog down really bad and one time the oil light came on and engine shut off. I pulled over let it cool and it started right back up and continued driving it’s slow sad way for a few more weeks until one afternoon I went to leave work and it made an extremely loud clacking/knocking noise. But did start.
- the weird part is, after draining the oil I expected to see a bunch of sparklies or sludge from thrown bearing and no such evidence.
So maaaaaybe I could get away with adding some seafoam and really thin 0W/20 oil to get it through its last 30’ journey??
…or does anyone know if maybe the bearing sludge wouldn’t show up right away since I turned it off as soon as I heard the death rattle…. And if it is indeed a bearing maybe I should attempt to put something extremely thick in it…
ANY advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

You're 100% sure its knocking? An engine that has a bad misfire/runs like garbage due to a bad MAF/failing fuel pump/clogged fuel filter/etc can make a noise that sounds like a knock when its struggling to run. I have an extremely hard time believing a sludge removal additive would have dislodged anything significant enough to clog the oil pump and starve the engine of oil
Yes, I am 100% sure it is an extremely loud knock. It does not have a misfire. It’s only code is a CAT one. It has had an intermittent timing chain tensioner slap under heavy load for years too. My other guess was that the timing chain finally broke but it wouldn’t have run if that was the case.
