Home Depot Gutter Guard Grill Question...

..where would I get a U-gasket or something similar for covering the sharp edges when making my own Home Depot Gutter Guard Grill? I think that grill-tech uses a U-gasket (basically a rubber "track" that the metal grill goes in so it doesn't scratch the paint).

What about the automotive trim that people use on the edges of their doors? I've seen it in black & clear.

When I installed mine, I stuck in up into the splash gaurd under the car and zip-tied it to the vertical plastic pieces. It fit perfectly and didn't have to worry about scratching the paint.

When I did it, I just did it behind the valence...But after going to home depot to get some weatherstripping to fix the rattle in the rear deck of my girlfriends car, I think you could use some of the heavy duty rubber weather stripping...You could easily mold it around the mesh and it comes in clear too...so it would hardly be visible

Hey spta97, I found some door edge molding, it's call TrimBrite made by Spartan Plastics Canada ltd, I bought this at Canadian Tire for 10$ the good thing about these door edge is they have some glue in it and there available in black - chrome - gold and many other colors. I made my grill almost 1 year ago and it is in perfect condition, the only thing is I was unable to find a lenght over 27".

Good luck.

would the zip ties start to wear on the vertical plastic pieces? The pieces are painted...no?

That's a pretty good idea. I should have thought of that before putting the gutter guard on my grill. Unfortunately, I was so exited about seeing how it was going to look, that I just placed it in between the horizontal bars of the grill without thinking about the possibility of scratches. So needless to say, I have a few scratches on my main grill. It really isn't necessary on the valance. I cut the valence just a bit small so that wouldn't happen.
Here's a pic of my grill and valence.

This is using a gutter mesh screen (kinda diamond pattern) in the grill (lower in my case) to save a couple bucks!

The 2k3 grill doesn’t work by putting the mesh screen behind it…it really has to be put in front.

Good find! They are supposed to sell it in the US (where I am) so I’ll look for this today as well! Thanks.

I didn’t think about this…however this is how even the after market ones are done (for the most part according to Grill-Tech.

The 2k3 grill is different. I’m only trying to do the lower valance, but it really needs to be put in front.

Here is a pic of what the aftermarket one by Grill-Tech looks like:

It might be worth it to spend the $60!

Sorry, must have missed your post! Wasn't trying to ignore you.

I basically took the home depot gutter guard mesh and cut it into the small sections you see in the pic. The best way is to use cardboard to make templates of each section and then cut the mesh from that. I cut the mesh about .5 to 1 inch larger than the template, and bent the excess mesh.I tried to bend all the angles so that the bent sections went into the grill. This way it has a bit of a 3D look when looking at it from the sides. Then just paint it whatever color you want, and voila! Using small zipties will hold it in place.

Good luck

Some suggestions...
Try and find some type of "rubber" track that spta97 started the thread about. It would prevent your grill from getting scratched up.
Also, get some kind of heavy duty wire cutters, otherwise, your hands will hurt from all the cutting

On a 2K2, is there any way to do this valance idea with the gutter mesh, or do I have to figure out a way to put it in front?

One more thing, is it possible to remove the ooglie plastic trim inside each hole on a 2K2 valence? I'd rather just remove that and then figure out a way to install the mesh....

I like that idea as soon as it gets wormer here in Chicago I will try it and if it doesnt work on my 2k2 Ill just try and put it over the stock grille. It beats paying $200 for the lower vellence and grille

Neal728: Look at the pic posted on the first page of this thread (Kloogy's car I believe). You can do something similar with the gutter guard.

2M0A0X2: Have you tried this, how did it turn out? I'm curious to see how it came out for you...

alright, i tried it with a little chicken wire (wasn't gonna leave it on), just to try, and i found it really hard to bend it and make it look as good as yours....how did you bend yours to make it look 3d like that?
