VE30 DE teardown

i want to take the front head off my 92 se to drill and tap a broken exaust manifold stud. However my haynes repair manual (72020)doesn't illustrate this engine. Ive gone as far as i dare without a manual. the chains on the side of this engine are a bit scary. the reason i started this was to eliminate the chirping bird sound that seemed to come from that area. i figured it was an exhaust leak. any ideas on the resourses i may need.

a REAL factory service manual will do you wonders. look on ebay or call your local nissan dealer.

Or, since you're dealing with the left bank you can remove the exhaust manifold, hoses, radiator and fans for easy access if you're (or someone else) skilled enough with a drill.

I haven't done it, but if you have a VE you DON"T wanna go through all the work to remove the head just to change an exhaust stud.

remove head = bad

dont do it unless you have to

remove headers
drill and tap

vs.

remove valve cover
remove partial timing chain cover
remove cams (or the sprockets on the end)
remove timing chain
remove upper intake
remove lower intake
remove headers
deal with oil and coolant
gasket set $$$

if your gonna take off the head, you might as well consider a full out rebuild, because the gasket prices simply cannot justify pulling the head to drill and tap. for the extra 5 mins of ease, it simply is not worth it.
