HELP! Can't go over 30mph!

Alright, so after I got my new engine swapped back in I finally decided to take it out for a test run. . . BUT! The car won't go past 30mph. . When looking at the RPMs, I will hit 1800 rpm and then the engine sounds like its cutting off my fuel or something. I step on the gas, but it's as if I hit the rev limiter? Does that make sense? HELP?! What is wrong with my car?!!!!!

Make sure the MAF sensor is plugged in and working.

There is a clamp or something stopping your throttle assembly from going WOT. See if you can open the butterfly inside the TB all the way.

Does it bounce at 1800RPM? You know, like at the rev limiter.

Doesn't the car do this when it is in limp mode? I don't remember how to determine if it is in limp mode or how to get out of it - maybe its in the FAQs or how-tos?

I had this exact problem I had totake it to a professional and he got it running. He said something about a choke mechanism by where the throtle cable is at. I will try to go down to that shop and find out exactly what he did.

Thanks for the help in advance. .. .

1. I don't know what limp mode is. can anybody elaborate?

2. Yes the rev bounces at 1800 . . . it goes up to 2000 then drops back to 1500...

Maybe the TPS is set up wrong? If lets say it was tilted all the way to one side, wouldn't it cause a low voltage reading and limit the rpms?

OK, reset the ECU, got a 0505 A-OK all clear,nothing wrong. . .

TPS? IS that Throttle position Sensor?

I dunno, but i dropped the car back off to my mechanic and I guess we'll see what's up. Also discovered that my car is blowing out smoke through the exhaust. Perhaps I'm running too rich? Dunno cuz my SAFC is not installed yet.

To check the TPS, open the TB butterfly plate all the way and disconnect the BROWN connector on top of the TPS. Now using a multimeter check if you have around 4v between pin 1 and 2 on the TPS not the brown connector.

Hey Will,

Still not up and running right yet?! Maybe I'll come drop by, let me know when you are free.

I have this same problem after running sea foam thru engine. TPS replaced twice, as is knock sensor. Disconnect the TPS, and car runs normal but idles high (110 in neutral; 1800 in any gear). Any ideas?

I would do the idle relearn and ECU reset but it sounds like you may have did the dreaded Throttle Plate touch. Check the stickies for these procedures.

First off, did u calibrate and install TPS properly.

Second, if u are idling high like that, clean ur TB and MAF. Check your IACV.

What is bizarre is that the car idles normally with the TPS plugged in, but wont rev past 1800 rpm. If I UNPLUG the TPS, it idles at 1800 RPM, but revs up and drives normally (besides the fast idle). Stop the car and throw it in neutral, and it idles back at 1100. Throw it in gear (still stopped) and it pops back up to 1800. I DID clean the IAVC (was severely carboned), but no effect.....

BTW; used MAF cleaner on sensor, and TB is clean....

Assuming idle relearn is disconnecting battery, reconnecting, then turn ignition on and depress throttle 5 times? If so, I tried it w no change.

Stickies? :-)

It doesn't sound like a MAF issue because when my MAF when out I had a bunch of codes, too lean, too rich, bank one, bank two. Basically a mess.

And my car wouldn't run pass 3K RPM.

But your problem doesn't sound like something is physically stopping your throttle but more like a safeguard or something stopping it. Perhaps the TPS is on its way out? Like when you step on the gas its only reading a certain voltage and staying there instead of increasing as you step harder on the pedal.

EDIT: Whoa, I completely thought that viking1 was the OP since you guys had such similar problems! After some more thinking it still puzzles me. Since what ever is stopping the car from going over 1.8K RPM is cutting off fuel or air, but not too sure if it affects spark. And the only things that do that are sensors or maybe its actual injectors themselves not spraying enough gas to go over 1.8K RPM. Could the ECU screw affect or limit our RPM? Maybe its not turned all the way to one side or something.

Have u checked reesistance for IACV?

PCV?

no leaks in intake piping. U prolly have a crapped out MAF man.

I'm having the same problem,my car at fist would bog down after 2000 rpm's.Now after a few days it dies when I give it gas. Many have said it might be the MAF?I hope it is,I just ordered one.(Sorry for the high jack)

Is there a specific test for the MAF? I guess I could use the search function (LOL). I DID clean the MAF sensor with proper MAF cleaner. Is there something else besides the sensor that goes out? Didnt change a thing on the ECU.....

although its very unlikely, if somthing is restricting the exhaust or intake manifold, this could also cause a very low rev ceiling. was this a drop in, a used engine, a short block, or long block?
