How do i tighten my serpentine belt. i replaced my alternator yesterday and tighted the best as best as i could and now its squeeking. the gold tensioner bolt is reverse threaded so then i turn that bolt the belt gets looser. and i cant switch around the tensioner assembly because then the belt wouldnt fit. the way i had to tighten it yesterday was that i had someone pushing down on the tensioner assembly while the tensioner pully has loose and i tightened it as best as i could but i guess that wasnt good enough. the belt is brand new too. someone PLEASE HELP!!!!

 

I pulled out my Haynes manual to see what it said, but serpentine belt isn't even in the index. Sorry, I can't help you.

There are drivebelts for the alternator and power steering.

 

The reverse-threaded tensioner is on the power steering pump belt. In order to adjust it properly, you need to loosen the pump pivot bolt, which is in BACK of the pump and hard to find. See the upper-left of the diagram on page MA-10 of the PDF. (The power steering pump is the most rear-ward pulley IIRC) Amazingly, this pivot bolt is not listed in any manuals!! I think it's a 14mm or 16mm bolt, and I reached it using a flex-head 3/8" ratchet and socket. Adjusting the bracket won't work properly without loosening that bolt, and it will break the bracket if you try too hard (ask me how I know!)

Take a break, come back and look around and make sure the proper pivot bolts are loosened before working with the adjuster. Then retighten the pivot bolts after you get the belts tensioned.

well its official im an idiot i put the tensioner back together wrong after i took it off. I had one of the bolts in the wrong spot. thanks for the help and quick replys guys.

 

The PS belt is seperate from the Alternator, A/C conpressor belt.
