Oil and the 5th Gen, did I use too much...

Alright, I have done my searches and I know that it's only suppose to be 4.25 quarts but I changed my oil before I researched.

The previous owner had records of every oil change in which he use Mobil 5w30Syn... So I figure use this as well. I purchased 5 Quarts and an M1-110 filter.

I always put some oil in the filter and then put the rest in the car. All 5 quarts, will this hurt the car? The ****ty dip stick always has the reading a bit over high...

Should I worry., OR just make sure and do the right thing next time around in 2k.

my dipstick reads way over the "H" line. I dont know why, but the previous owner probably put a lot more oil thant it should be. It looks like it was serviced by a nissan dealer, beacuse the little sticker that reminds u of the oil change was from nissan.
but yea, mine reads way over the H line.

Some engines are very sensitive to overfilling and cause seals to leak overtime, some are not. No exact answer here.

I never have a problem taking a reading from the dip stick. Just check it when the car is cold on a level surface prior to driving. The reading should always be under the "H" mark, especially when its cold.

It probably won't hurt the car but the extra vapors from the oil may be getting sucked up the crankcase hose and back into your intake tract more excessively than normal.

The question is why would you bother putting more than the recommended amount? That's like trying to pump 19.5 gallons into our 18.5 gallon fuel tank

The best answer is to simply drain out about a quart, then replenish as necessary to the FULL mark.

On most engines the overfill condition can cause the oil in the sump to be whipped into a non-lubricating foam. Don't guess as to whether or not yours is one of them.

Ah, I found the term: cavitation
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cavitation

That's the possibility when you overfill your engine with oil. Basically the crankshaft sits in extra oil and makes everything all frothy. Then the oil can't be extracted and pumped properly.

You can also find the recommended amount by calling a local dealership or looking the owners manual. The V6 3.0 liter = x.xx amount of oil doesn't work. My cousin's subaru at 4 cylinder, 2.5 liter takes 4 quarts of oil. My civic at 4 cylinder, 1.8 liter takes 3.75 quarts of oil.

I know the 3.5 takes 4-1/4 quarts according to the owners manual. I had Valvoline change my oil once (mistake) and they put in 5 quarts. I do all the oil changes myself now and always use 4-1/4. I use the Amsoil 5w30, so the extra 3/4 of a a quart left over saves money for the next oil change.

Always put in the OEM spec volume of oil. If you have more or less, do what you need to do to get it where it needs to be. [/thread]

yeah i would drain 3/4 of a quart out of there, because the higher oil pressure could cause leaking seals

Best to avoid damage to seals & remove 0.75 qt.

Doesn't matter unless it's full enough to touch the crank. 3/4 qt isn't going to do that.
