Can I swap for for old style ignition keys?

I hate the security system in my 2002 Max, the old 1995 that I had was great, simple easily replaceable keys.
Can I dump the '02 system in favour of the old one?

I'm talking about ignition only. The doors open fine with a key that I had cut and did not set up with the code.

wait?..what?.........huh?

What do you mean replaceable keys?..... The key has a radio transponder inside of it, so the ignition WONT start unless the transponder signal is picked up, hence if you use that UNPROGRAMMED key in your ignition the engine will NOT turn over...as far as DUMPING it, im not sure if it would even be WORTH the hassle or headache......I mean if your gonna try and kick the security system, you might as well go aftermarket

only way to do what you want is to hide a copy of the 02 key in your steering column. This way any cut key will work. Same way we do the Remote start systems.

^^ word. as long as the key is within a certain distance from the transponder, the correct signal will be sent and the ECU will allow the car to start. You can even dig the chip out of your current key and hide it underneath the plastic around the steering column, and regular cut keys will work from then on..

If it were me, I'd rather have the added security of the immobilizer and pay $100 to replace a key...

maybe dont lose your keys???

I actually agree with you that having a system that costs $100+ to replace a key is highway robbery.... its just a way for them to make more money. There has to be a less expensive way to do it. All they really need is something similar to an access card like I have to get in the building at work. I'll bet those cards dont cost $100 each.

Thanks for all the thoughts.
I just wanted a simple system, I have one key left and I know I'll loose it sometime, leaving me with a huge headache, if I could copy a few keys and screw them under my car, give one to my wife, stick one up the dogs ****, you know generally hide them, I'd feel less anxious.

I loose keys.

Mercedes keys or any key that doesn't even need to be put into the ignition (cars that use a start button, for example) cost upwards of $800 to replace!
