My little diy on making my reverse HID bulbs

So I decided to do HID reverse lights after tinting my tails. This how my way of making the hid bulb fit nicely into the reverse bulb part without taping it or anything.(that was my original plan/idea)

So these are the two items before (h3 hid bulb and the reverse light bulb holder)

I put the holder in the vice and went to work with the dremel/torch and knife to melt it away. My object was to get rid of the inner part so I could fit the h3 bulb

It fit pretty tight and nice in there, I put JB Weld to be sure.

This was the first one I did with gorilla glue...not win lol

Anyway they fit like a charm, I'm all prewired with a relay, waiting for some ballasts.

Nice, waiting on how it turns out. I tested fitted some a few months ago but they kept flickering. What type of relay did you use? have any pics of it?. GL.

Nice work! Im guessing heat wont be an issue because the bulbs probably wont be on for more than 20 seconds at a time? I look forward to pics of when they are all lit up

Yep once I get the ballast it'll be like 5 minutes to put them in and secure them. Then I'll do a couple tests see how warm it gets there over how much time. I think I should be good for at least a minute but we'll see.

Way to steal my mod Just kidding

You may need to drill holes in the back of the housing to help vent some of the heat outta there. I did just in case and haven't had any problems.

Looking forward to a write up on how you wired it up too. I'm planning on doing this too, but wiring it up to a manual switch so I can just flip it on and off whenever I want.

Output pics:

Seems to be good for at least 3 minutes so far without too much heat, 5-10 second start up for high output. Brighter than my led reverse lights from the start though.

Anyone really interested can PM me for details.

I'll admit when I first read the thread title I thought..."Why"? Tonight though as I was backing up out of my driveway and not able to see anything at all I would've loved the HID backup lights. How much did this set you back Lexus Lover?

Here is a little mini write up of sorts:

Hey you're gonna need an automotive relay.

http://www.the12volt.com/relays/relaydiagram25.html

Pick one side to do the wiring on then just run a positive wire to the other side. I chose the right side. Connected the + and - of the reverse light socket to pins 86 and 85 respectively.

You need to get a 12+ constant for pin 87, I tapped off my amp wiring. Finally the output is pin 30. You need to run this to the other side and a piece to stay on the right side.

Those are the + connections for the ballast, for the - I used a ring terminal and a self tapping screw.

The wires were soldered to the plug the HID kit comes with and the ballast doubleside taped down.

Hm not much in time or $$, the hid kit was around 35, I already had the 14 gauge wire, and relay and such, the relay is probably like 4-5 dollars. And around an hour in time.

It so happens I have an extra relay from my air horn endeavors. I also saw an hid kit on Ebay for around $35.00 shipped. I might give this a shot. My window tint makes it very hard to see while backing up at night, and now as my city has turned off streetlights due to budget cuts it's pitch black in my cul-de-sac.

I would def do this but I have nowhere to reverse. By the time I am done reversing, the lights would have just got warmed up. Nice work btw.

The price I pay for living in a place with 300+ days of sunshine a year. It's either window tint or faded, cracked interior. Plus it looks good too.
