Transmission issues in my Maxi other then Input shaft now :(
Transmission issues in my Maxi other then Input shaft now :(
It whines really bad now. Mostly in 1st 2nd and 3rd when it gets to higher RPMs. I just had the clutch and TO bearing replaced back in Jan and I put that syn amsoil(GL4) everyone talks like its god's oli. And I know my Input shaft bearing has been going what would that have anything to do with the rest of the trans doing this? It is getting so noisy you can hear me down the st and I am worried cause I don't know how much time I have left. I think it was the oil that caused this damage, but I can't be sure, but then again I think whining could happned from a lose Input shaft and I always feel like a looseness between engine tranni like 1-2rpms worth when you hit it.
Bascially I don't know a lot about transmissions like I do the rest of the car. They barely covered Standards in school haha, So basically what I am trying to ask is... How much time would someone have? Can this be fixed? After Replacement of input shaft bearing? how much is it for a new tranni other then 3 grand at nissan which it is probably? I can't buy a new car yet and I don't think she is gonna last much longer. I stopped racing years ago ever since I heard about my IPS bearing going but of course it just gets worse. It is heartbreaking.
history notes: Had my maxi for 6 and a half years and the other issues I had with it is drivetrain(axles) an alternator and crappy suspension(balljoints and tierods) with 3 knock sensors an Ac compressor and now a tranni. lol. I don't think these are the worst as the engine has been mint but she is at 208k and I am scared to buy any older nissan in the future just for the tranni and of couse all I buy is standard(stick)
thanks guys. I hope something can be done and I need it done fast and hopefully not too much over a grand if possible. haha

the only way to keep it under a grand is to pull the tranny yourself and try to fix it yourself.
Can u do it s1, if u got the tools then yeah man u can do it.
Get the FSM, use the org, and try to tackle the job.
OR, jus find a used tranny and throw that in the car. U can find those in Mass. That would cost under a grand.

I used to have a 98 Max 5 speed. I put in red-line synthetic MT90 at about 50K miles. The car felt great, shifted a whole lot better than with stock nissan fluid. At 110K miles, my bearings were screaming. At 140K miles, I had a shop replace the throw out bearing and the clutch.
That car has since been totalled.
I have another Nissan now (98 I30 5 speed).
I'm sticking with Nissan fluids all the way from now on.

The FSM says to replace every 30k
redline mt90 is one of the best transmission fluids for our rides, that's what I run...
There are always other factors that come into play when transmission fails, you cannot just put it all on the fluids..
op what do you mean by 'feel a looseness between engine and tranny'?

actually i tried amsoil/mt-90 and mt-85 in my 03 6mt and drove that car like i stole it and with the mt-85 being the best imo i never had a problem with any of my drivetrain and that was 45k miles of straight abuse. Hey s1c is that tranny that's in there now howling away the same one you were racing with a few years ago ? If it is i would blame all the high rpm shifts and dead launches for the failing trans rather than blaming a synthetic gear oil

Well when I raced I didn't do a lot of really hard dead launches. And this was years ago like almost 5. I didn't start having these whine issues until the past year when this oil was placed in when the clutch got replaced. IPS bearing went 3 years ago or so and got louder though out the years
Hey guys, I've been racing for the past three years on 87 octane. yesterday I put in premium, and threw a rod. Was it the premium fuel??
Just an analogy, I dont think it was the oil. Time for a rebuild.
Lol, your trans is 13 years old and has been raced on, and your blaming the best oil out there? what oil ere you running before, while you were racing?

lol I wish I could just slap in a 6mt, but its pain to find a bellhousing and all that other junk you gotta replace. AKA shifter linkage.
Yea man these trannies are hit or miss dude,I think i have the same problem as you S1,I found a cheap cheap full 6mt swap the other day (cough) aackshun lol,Nobody wants to do it for me and im working 60 plus hours a week right now so i know im going to regret passing that up because i called a boneyard near me today and they wanted 1125 for an 01 open diff 5mt...WTF..I can't see myself going from an AE lsd to open diff,Im gonna pull my driver side axle tomorrow and the how much play we got in there..o boy hewego
But your not using the incorrect oil, your trans is old, and you raced on it. New IPS bearings dont mean squat cause your gears are doing the whining. You took years off the lifetime of your trans by racing and now its dying. Your logic is a fail.
After u replaced the fluid at 50k, did u ever replace again?
Im tryin to understand why the Spds have such a high failure rate. I want to know if its due to ppl not replacing the fluid at 30k intervals as recommended in FSM.

You know, then again, maybe its me. I drive hard and a similar fate came to a Honda 5 speed I have. 60K of my driving and the gearboxes start singing those whiny blues

I raced it 4-5 years ago. And I never raced along time. The transmission was fine for a long time until the IPS bearing started to make sounds. This just started to happen in the past 6-8 months or so. Since changing oil. OR it has to do with the IPS bearing going. That was my question. I am sure it has to do with the IPS bearing but every single gear is what makes me wonder if it was gearoil related.

That is an interesting observation. When my tranny went, it was only 1st gear singing the blues. The other gears were still OK.

That question was a result of the incredulity caused by most of your threads, culminating with this one.
Had similar issues and am currently rebuilding my trams now...ill give you about 3 maybe 4 months before it craps out on you with things getting progressively louder and worse. But I don't recommend driving around on it like that for long if possible. I had no choice I finally lost 1st and 2nd gear and when I cracked mine open I found that the input shafts teeth were sheared off and the inside of the housing was scratched up. Trust me you do not wanna deal with that mess.

So What I have decided too do because I am low on time therefore low on money, Is I am gonna buy a $500 junky ward tranni. Pop that in and deal with what ever issues that will have later down the road. The thing that sucks is because I have no access to a lift I am gonna pay someone to do this and I gotta pay for them to take out the new clutch and put it in the old tranni. I hope I can find one with Decent miles on it and or no issues cause I only got 1 shot on this. I would like to find an closed diff but I would need to change my driver axle so that would be kind of a pain to have to buy a new axle, plus I doubt I could find a closed diff around here for a decent price anyway. Not like they are that good anyway from what I heard and cause massive understeer in snow. lol
