Are the side mirrors supposed to tilt in reverse?

I heard this somewhere a while ago, and never really paid attention, but I'm curious.

When in reverse are they supposed to tilt? If yes, what specific models/how do we test it?

Also another question, whenever I close my driver side mirror, and open it, the mirror moves. Is this normal, or should I take it to the dealer?

The switch to adjust the left and right mirror adjustments is the "on and off" switch for the automatic angle down of the mirrors in reverse .
Just test it i can't remember, I think in the middle is off and right switch kept on will make the mirrors point down. Or left.. Test it...

Yep. Middle position of mirror switch is off. Right or left position of mirror swutch allows mirrors to tilt upon reverse.

Really? The whole mirror assemblies will fold back in reverse like Mercedes vehicles if the mirror switch is positioned in the middle? I am going to have to try this, didn't know it as long as I have has my maxima.

No the whole mirror assembly does not fold back when in reverse. What does happen though is the mirror plate tilts down when backing up giving you a better view, if you have the selector switch in the left or right position. Center position the feature is turned off.

Something to know. If the tilt down feature stops working and you have the switch to the left or right. Before you spend the hundreds the dealer wants to replace it, (if you're out of warranty) manually push the mirror thru all it's movements.

I had my passenger side replaced twice under warranty and the 3rd time I bought the part and installed it myself. Out of curiosity I pushed it and plugged it back in and it worked.

Apparently the part isn't lubricated too good and the cold weather coupled with water from washing the car makes it lock up.

Do all the 7th gens do this? I have a '14 Maxima S, and I don't think I've noticed this? It's at the dealer now for warranty work, maybe I should call them to ask and check?

I think it is just the ones with the LED turn signals in the mirror that tilt down but I could definitely be wrong

My 2013 SV has the LED blinkers and the neither mirrors tip down in reverse gear despite multiple attempts with all varieties of mirror switch position. I've been ROOKED !!

I also don't have a rear-view camera....boo hoo (

The tilt mirrors are included as a part of the rearview monitor package, and to have that you'll need to have the navigation system. That's why you will see some "S" model cars without tilt mirrors because they don't have the navigation system.

Not quite right as I have a SV sport with tilting mirrors without the navigation pkg.

Heh, I knew some 7th gens had this feature, but I assumed mine did not because I had never seen the side mirrors move down when shifting into reverse. Turns out I had just disabled it by having the mirror adjustment selector switch in the center position. Neat!

It's only available on the Maxima's that have the premium or sports package.

The premium package has the panoramic sunroof, that's not available on the sports package, premium package also has Atlantic cherry wood trim. The sports package has a standard rear spoiler, and 19" alloy wheels, and has aluminum or silver trim inside. Do you have the color screen or the orange screen? You might just have the SV model without any packages. If you don't have a power tilt and telescopic steering wheel, or memory seats then you don't have the sports package or premium.

Awe I have nun of that lol.

Aside from the steering wheel and the memory seat is there any other difference in performance?

Only with the sports package ride quality is different due to the stiffer sporty suspension and 19" alloy wheels. I test drove a maxima with the sports package, and the ride was too firm and stiff for me, so I found a maxima with the premium package, and I like the feel of the non sports package, premium package is more luxury I love it, I just don't have Navi, but that's not a necessity.

I am not for sure, but I believe so. I have a 2014 sv sport and it was one of the advertised features when I was researching It. It can be turned on and off via the touch screen navigation unit.

Ha! I freaked out when my side mirrors wouldn't shift down then I realized the switch was in the middle and breathed a sign of relief.

Also, I wish 7th gen had folding side mirrors.

I still can't fathom how a 6th generation Maxima has power folding side mirrors, but not a 7th generation, it just doesn't make any sense, the mirrors would fold in fine IMO.

I own both, an 07' and an 11'

07's have folding mirrors, reverse tilting mirrors, compass in rearview mirror, ALL mirrors dim at night, back up warning chime / alarm.

The 11' - no compass in my model (built in on nav screen), only the rearview and the driver side mirror dims at night, Granted, I have a back up camera but no chime ( i love my back up camera). mirrors do tilt.

In all fairness, I live in Georgia so i don't NEED folding mirrors as i NEVER use that feature in my 07' anyway, if i were still in NYC then yes. It would've made more sense if it automatically folded when the car was turned off anyway. My 07' does not lose memory for the seats unlike my 11', after a week or so the steering wheel will adjust to my lap. ANNOYING!!! I feel my 07' is a bit smoother on acceleration and comfort.

I just picked up a 2012 Max and the switch that adjust the side view mirrors don't work at all could that be a bad fuse or is the motor dead? I had a 04 Max and never had a problem with the mirrors its really frustrating

Make sure the switch is all the way to the right or left and it should work. If the switch is in the middle it will not work.

I tried with the switch on both the left and right side it's the same setup as my 6th gen. I hope it's not the motor that'll suck!

Tilt down mirrors and auto dim mirrors

Hello fellow Maximinions! Lol
So I have to replace the mirror that’s a part of my side view mirror assembly, and I can’t find an auto dim mirror besides the ones at Nissan which are almost 300$? I get that because of my auto dim feature they will be more expensive, but my question is, if I get a cheaper one that doesn’t have an auto dim feature, will it still have the ability to tilt down? Or do I have to pay the full price on my left side in order or to get that feature ?:/

As far as I know auto dim and auto tilt are two separate features. One is controlled by a motor and the other works because of a chemical coating on the glass. Regular mirror glass will work with the auto tilt feature.

Just swap the mirror glass. Easy peasy.
