post top-end work:

The Cruise Control no longer functions. I know it used to work recently, but am not certain it did immediately prior to taking the top end apart. The Cruise cable seems as-well-adjusted as the throttle cable is...i had removed that whole bracket from the intake with the cables still attached.

The light on the dash DOES illuminate when you press it - but using the Set or Resume or Accel buttons doesn't do anything. I recall a yellow "Cruise" light on the dash that would light when Cruise was "Active"...no light anymore.

I haven't started into the FSM yet re: this issue.

 

Did you reconnect the vacuum line?

 

I didn't purposefully unplug the cruise control vacuum line during service at all...

 

Ok. Does your RPM gauge and odometer work as they should? If not, the VSS could be bad as the CC, RPM and odometer are all tied together.

 

YES those instruments are working properly.

So...I guess the answer is "two" plungers/switches - one on either side of the lever portion of the brake pedal. What a place to try to take pictures of - to say nothing of how to work in there.

Looks like the plug on the left (driver's side of pedal lever) is intact, and the one on the right is missing (clean area on meal indicative of missing rubber plug). When I depress the right-hand plunger I can hear a click from underneath the dash - no clicks or anything when I click the left-hand plunger.

Looks like you may found the culprit.

 

I've replaced several over the years. Most of them have been for the clutch or brake light switches.

I get replacements from Ace Hardware. I'm sure Lowes also sells the same.

I use a nylon screw with wide head that will sufficiently cover the hole with a couple of nuts to keep it from working loose.

I've seen other members talk about using carriage bolts. I got started with the nylon version one night in a pinch. It works so I stayed with it. I haven't damaged a switch at this point by using nylon.

If you want to wait for a dealer, the original replacement might be easier to install. The trick is pressing down on the brake pedal while installing a replacement.

 

weird over 20 years driving maxima's never had one go bad.

 

Today when vacuuming the 99 SE 5-MT driver side floor mat, I found part of a broken rubber bumper. So the cruise control doesn't work. I'll be making a trip to Ace to get nylon screw to fill the hole.

I think all the heat from this summer is causing the rubber bumpers to melt at a faster than normal pace.
