I got a new shift **** i want to install but I'm having issues removing the old one. I have the center console off and the indicator trim popped off. But i cant seem to get where to disconnect the wires for the overdrive i believe. Any help would be appreciated

 

A quick search came up with this info

To remove the shift lever you have to remove the shifter trim plate which snaps in. Next you must remove the ashtray which is held in by one screw. The console must come out to gain access to remove the shifter indicator trim around the shifter. You have to remove all of this to gain access to unplug the overdrive switch wiring so that you will be able to pull the shift lever off the shaft. The console is held in the front with two screws visible with the shifter trim plate removed. There are also two screws at the rear of the console, one on each side. They are accessible with the seats moved all the way forward. The console will lift out in one piece after you unbutton the parking brake boot. Once the console is removed you will need to remove the indicator trim. This is held in place in four places with snap together joints that must be pressed in as you lift the trim. Once it is loose it will expose the path of the overdrive button wiring. The connector for the wiring must be unplugged from the right rear connector under the shifter mechanism. The shifter can now be removed after removing the two screws on the back side of the lever. The lever is a typical design where it has a plunger rod down the center that must be pressed down to move the lever. You should be able to install most any auto trans **** with push down or in release button. To retain the function of the overdrive button, just obtain a momentary switch from Radio Shack or from a source online. Find a location on the console or shifter plate and mount the switch. Connect the switch using the wiring removed from the original shift lever.

I have been following that guide tou posted before thats how i got the center console off and the indicator trim off. But it wasnt clear on the overdrive wires. And the #7 post you suggested to follow said to just cut the wires and be done with it. I was looking for less permanent option if possible. Is over drive important to keep? I normally have it off in my car anyway.

 

OD is important. It takes stress off of the engine through the transmission so you can drive at lower engine rpm's.

 

i did this about 10 years ago. I just took stuff off until I got to the OD connector. may have taken all of 20 mins start to finish.

dont remember my exact steps .. but common sense did lead to the issue being solved.

 

I'll give it another go at taking everything around it apart then. But my new shift **** will be one i have to push down on and doesnt have a button. So i dont think ill be able to turn on/off the overdrive afterwards. I do a lot stop and go city driving if that matters. Should i bother even changing the shifter then?

If your new shifter doesn't have a button, then you can simply cut the wires.

 

So if i leave over drive on then cut the wires will the light for over drive off appear on the dash or no?

 

The overdrive switch is a simple open/closed (not connected/connected) switch. When the overdrive is on, the switch is in the open (no connection) position. This means that the transmission will go into overdrive and there is no light on in the instrument cluster. This is the same as cutting the wires.

 

Ok thanks. Ill be giving those wires a snip snip when i get home from work and have time to update on how it went

 

Here how it looks now. Dont mind the trim around the radio im still looking for a replacement, some crack head tried to steal my radio but just damaged everything instead.
