2k2 shifter: too tall?

i was looking at a picture the inside of my car and it occured to me that the shifter is really tall. anyone else agree? i may consider cutting it but i dont know what this entails.

first off, SHOULD i cut it? 2nd, what steps do i take to do this? how much should i cut? how do i make sure the shift **** will screw back on?

Naw. Install a Short Throw Shifter instead. You'll be glad you did, especially if the 2K2 is still plagued by the elbow-into-the-arm-rest-release problem.

Would installing a s/throw shifter eliminate the notchiness inherent in the current 6spds design??

but that wouldnt reduce the hight of the shifter at all, would it? a short shifter is definitely coming sooner or later but right now im just talking about how it looks.

You're correct. The height of the Stillen STS is about the same as the stock shifter.

If you cut the stock shifter, you'll probably have to install an aftermarket shift ****. Either that or you'll have to remove the shifter and take it to a machine shop to be re-threaded.

Remember, the 2k2 6 speed tranny is cable acuated. The 95-01 have linkage acuation. This is why the 95-01 have EXCELLENT feel compared to the crap feel of the 2k2. The 95-01 STS WILL NOT work with the 2k2. You're only option is to cut the shifter or wait till a STS comes out. If you cut the shifter, you will either have to get an aftermarket shift **** or glue on the stock **** because you will have to cut the threads. Shortening the throw always results in more notchiness because you are changing the leverage therefore you end up putting more stress on the syncros.

the crap feel of the 2K2 shifter? please the 2k2 shifter is not that bad....i had a 97 5 spd and i feel not much difference, maybe the 2K2 is bit more notchy but i still just have 2K miles on my 2K2, the shifter will most likely shed some of that notchy feel with some miles. The 2K2 is heads and shoulders above my 97.

The 02 shifter works well except in the very cold temps. I would recommend Redline, had great results in the past.. I will get it done this Spring.

Is redline an expensive alternative? Also can I just switch over to it at any time or is there some requirements?

As I remember it is ~$3 per quart and you can do it any time. I had it recommended for 1>2 grind on my 300ZXTT and it was like a trans rebuild!

Thanks, I was wanting to change it out now but I remember hearing that you weren't supposed to till like 30k miles. Oh well, I'm assuming auto-zone or the sort would carry it?

Also about chopping the stick, can we do that with our reverse lockout there? I looked at it briefly when I first got it and it seems like we'd have to get a whole new unit.
