Long overdue updates: drivetrain and braking mods
I've been slacking on sharing my progress. Heres a list of what I have been working on.
Pacesetter short throw shifter
Unorthodox Racing under drive pulley
Fidanza light weight flywheel
Exedy stage 1 clutch
2001 VLSD transmission
Stainless steel clutch hose
6th gen PowerStop OE front brake kit (Z16)
New rear rotors, new calipers, PowerStop pads (Z23)
Shifter went in surprisingly smooth. All the bolts came out easy. I tried a few different lengths; left it at full reduction. It used to be set half way on my old car which was where I should have left it for easier gear changes.
The UDP was not bad either. The steering pump tensioner played nicely. I didn't even have to swear at it. I changed the oil seal while in there.
The previous owner told me it needed a trans rebuild. It leaked a bit out of the left side. No big deal, I have a VLSD. I'm getting really good with pulling transmissions. I started a timer before jacking up the car. The drive shafts were out in 20 min. I had the trans out in less than 90 minutes. Then I cleaned all the oil leaks and replaced the rear main seal with upper oil pan seal. I swapped over the timing ring, bolted up new flywheel and clutch. I replaced the drive shaft seals on the AE trans, cleaned the bell hosting and lubed the new TOB and fork. After bolting the trans to the engine I changed out the rubber hoses to SS and bled the system. Topped off with Amsoil MTG.
The old brakes got some cleaning and lube early this year. I even swapped a sticking caliper. However, the whole setup was lacking and ready to be replaced. After looking at the budget upgrade options, 5.5 vs 6 gen for ease of one part number type of bolt on, I went with PowerStop one click 07-08 kit. I painted everything with VHT, drilled out the knuckle to 9/16" and bent the dust shields flat for the install. This with crap rear brakes and non ABS was a horrible combination. Far too much power up front. On to the rear. Generic rebuilt calipers, cheap rotors and PowerStops middle of the road pads. This made a world of difference. This combo is a great budget minded choice.

More than likely Rockauto.com I just upgraded my 4th Gen to Q45 dual piston calipers/rotors for that extra bit....I love the 6th Gen front braking assemblies I just don't like the idea of drilling the spindle thru bolt bores out to accommodate those larger 5th/6th Gen torque member bolts which are 14mm diameter up from 12mm (2nd-4th Gen)OEM bolts...That means nearly .080" (2mm) need to be removed to make these 6th Gen brakes fit the 4th Gen spindle. This doesn't sound safe to me...

Rockauto has good prices though the shipping can be a deal breaker on heavy parts. I got them from Jeg's on ebay with a coupon code a bit under $200.
There will be no drilling on a 5th gen, only manipulating the dust shields.
Before the brakes felt like pressing harder did nothing. I know this is due to overall condition and type of pads. Now they feel normal.

Oh BTW I see those Duralast pads on the 11.75" rotors...

I realize that no drilling is required on a 5th Gen but aren't you installing these on a 4th Gen? As for weight penalty...Haven't paid alot on heavy items yet from Rock Auto...I purchased brakes (Rotors and Pads) for 5.5th Gen, my Fronts were (6th Gen X-Drilled/Slotted Rotors) and Z26 Extreme Pads and the rears were (5th Gen X-Drilled/Slotted Rotors) and Z26 Extreme pads, total: $146...ASwesome pricing and performance!

As for the brakes on rockauto he is right. The shipping is $33 for the cheapest service. JEGS is the cheapest place.Free shipping.
All said in done i put them in carts 3 places JEGS was the cheapest.

I have had the Pacesetter since 04. It came on my 98. The Stillen one is rare. It came on a 97 I parted out this year.
I have insalled B&M and thier knockoff and Nismo branded cheapies. None have had a decent bend like the stock shifter. Some can cause issues hitting the trim in 1,3,5. The Pacesetter has good clearance and is my favorite.
