V2 belt shreds.....
so im fixing a friend's Max thats supercharged. After i fix it, i go for a test drive, then i hear a odd noise and see hella black smoke in the mirror. I also begin to smell burnt rubber, so im thinking the belt shredded. When i get back and pop the hood, shredded belt.
Why does the belt shred so much on these V1/V2 superchargers??? im sooo glad i didnt go the supercharger route. Yeayea i know lots of probs with my turbo setup but better then a gay belt shredding.

Its a V2 thing.
Stealin went to a less costly design for the mounting plate with the V2 kit.
On my V1 I have never had a problem with a belt shreading. I lost one rib on a crapy Dayco belt because I put it on overlaping the AC pulley on rib and didnt catch it till a few days later, my fault. I have been using Goodyear Gatorback belts and they hold like a champ. I took one of after ~10k with a 2.62" pulley and it was in great shape, I changed it any way though just to be safe. If you have a SC get the Gatorback!

Most of the time when you lose a belt on a supercharged engine, the belt has slippage. Either you are not tightening it enough or the supercharger is not anchored and is pulled toward the crank which in turn loosens the belt. The Mustangs with high boost must have additional bracing to keep the blower from pulling towards the crank. You may think the blower is mounted solid as a rock when in fact it is not.

Belts just dont shred like that, the belt most likely fell off one of the pulleys or jumped on a rail of a pulley. Install a new one crank it up and have the driver stay put to shut off the engine and you can solve the problem from there.
Like Matt said I think it's a V2 thing. On my old V2 SC, the belt shredded on me once. On the V1 however, I never had that problem. I had the Gates on the V2 and the Gatorback on the V1. Get the Gatorback!
Well I did just 1hr what a s/c guru told me to do, I just shaved the whole peg off the Stillen S/C bracket. I shaved damn near half the peg and it still was rubbing, then I said F@$# it, Im taking it off. This way I dont risk and rubbing.

Seriously, what size pulley, did you grind the plate, maybe a bolt isn't tightened down and is touching the belt, etc?

Isn't the shredding due to the alignment of the pulleys or mounting bracket? When I my belt was squealing earlier this month I did note that the belt was starting to fray on the side closest to the engine block. When I took off the blower I noticed that the installer had used some washers.

alignment probs yes, and Stillen recommends washers to shim the plate/blower therefor you can align all the pullies. Shadows blower is shimmed at least close to 1/4 an inch away from the motor.
Another contributor to shredded belts is idler pulleys with rails. In my opinion stillen made the idler pulley with out rails for a purpose. That purpose is to route the belt. if the belt slightly touches the idler pulley with rails over time expect that belt to go. Just my 02. cents, I seen it happen to a member so I am not talking out of my imagination.
my belt had one groove out of the 6 wrip completely off. I have 5 out of 6 grooves on the SC pulley. Its not that bad its justa pain in the @$$ that I have to remove the blower to change the belt.
or take it to Jeff and have him do it cause I am too lazy

nymjayjay,
Did you ever figure out why 1 of the ribs was destroyed? This happened to me and it was the outside rib furthest from the engine and I could never pinpoint the reason!

my belt was too loose and it slipped off the pulley one notch when I had it dyno'd. I fixed it shortly after but I guess when it slipped off the belt was chewed up a little and eventually it wripped apart a little.

On high boost applications Vortech began supplying a rod brace that goes from the crank to the blower for this reason.
