Help, 225/50/17, 1998 Maxima, best tire

Help, 225/50/17, 1998 Maxima, best tire

OK, a follow up to myself,

I am now thinking I'll just go to Discount Tire (America's Tires) here in LA and it looks like it comes down to these if I cross reference them with Tire Racks Best survey, they have in my size:

I am particuarly interested in cornering stability ratings and steering response

- Michelin Pilot Sport (rated #2 in Tire Rack) for Max Perf Category
- Good year Eagle F1, (rated #3 in Tire Rack) for Max Perf Category
- Bridgestone Potenza RE050A or 750 (rated #4 in Tire Rack) for Max Perf Category, not at Discount tire
- Goodrich g-Force Sport or (TA KDW2 not at Discount Tire)
- Falken Ziex ZE-512
- Good year Eagle F1's
- Kumho ECSTA SPT

I have heard good things about the Kumho SPT and Falken 512's, the 512s not rated by Tire Rack, Kumho's placed 7 and the Goodrich g-Force 4th in Ultra High Perf Category.

Just by going from these Tire Rack #s, it looks like, for cornering stability ratings and steering response: Michelin Pilot Sport and Bridgestone Potenza RE050A have the best #'s for Max class.

And Goodrich g-Force Sport or TA KDW2, has best #'s for Ultra class

Thoughts greatly appreciated.

My own reply,

OK, after many hours researching the data at Tire Rack .com, I am going with:

Michelin Pilot Sport PS2, 2nd highest rated, "9" in all the things that matter to me. Reviewers all love them, sending Yokohama AVID V4S's back to Tire Rack and getting these. Hope they are what people say they are.

Had to get 235/45/17's

Tire Rack rep tried these on a race track on a Porsche, he loves them, says they will definitely bring a smile to your face.

What are the advantages / disadvantages to running a 235/45/17 versus a 225/50/17, obviously the 235 is wider and the 45 is shorter, are there any disadvantages to running a 45 over a 50 (on stock Maxima 2001 wheels).

thanks in advance

The rule of thumb (it is only a rule of thumb, but, like most rules of thumb, there is something behind it) is that for 50-series and taller tires, the rim width should be 70% of the section width, and for 45-series and shorter tires, the rim width should be 85% of the section width. That is because, as the sidewall gets shorter and stiffer, there is less flex in it to be pinched in on a narrow rim, and some of the flex has to be "borrowed" from the tread area, distorting the contact patch under load. NOTE: this is different from the "approved" rim widths that tire manufacturers specify for each size of tire; we are discussing optimal here.

That means, for a 225/50 tire, a 6.5" rim or a 7" rim is cool, but for a 235/45, you really should be using a 7.5" rim.

Just removed the Cooper Lifeliner Touring SLE after 36k miles.

The only reason I replaced them was that we hit something and trashed one. I was relatively happy with them until the last year and they floated in snow and heavy rain as well as being really noisey on certain roads.

They were replaced with Mastercraft Sensys01 in the stock size.

They are the production "twin" of the SLE. Mastercraft is a division of Cooper and they are manufactured in the USA. I like the tread on the outer edge as there are channels that allow water to move all the way to the edge from the center of the tire. The work great in heavy rain and handling has not changed from the SLE which I would have expected since they are the same tire internally.

I have used Cooper and sister brands on my cars for 20 years with great success. Great product for great price.

I have those as well. Gone almost 3 year and 40,000 miles on them. Great tire, just now getting down to 3/32 of an inch.
Debating between those again or Pirelli.

Hey guys, been reading on Tire Rack's tire reviews and the following tires have caught my attention:

1) Yokohama AVID TRZ (Standard Touring All-Season tire) - 9.9

2) BF Goodrich Traction T/A (High-performance all-season tires) - 8.1

3) Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 (Maximum performance summer tires) - 9.1

If you've used any of these tires on your Maximas, please chime in your comments or experiences on them. I'm not concern about winter handling because it doesn't snow here in So.California. With the winter season coming up, I am concerned about wet traction w/o compromised dry traction. I currently have Nitto Extreme 555 tires, I love the dry traction and handling. I don't know how it handles on wet road conditions as I have had these tires since spring of this year and its already wearing down fast! I'm looking for tires with longer thread life, a good balance of wet/dry traction and performace, in V or S speed rating. I think the Yokohama Avid is H rated only.

Please chime in your comments.

I've got 47K on Michelin Pilot Sport A/S and they have been great. I'm starting to get some wheel spin from wet starts, but if I don't get on it too bad, they are fine. I noticed a slow leak today and if that tire is shot, I'll probably get a new set. I've been looking at the Yokohama YK520 from Discount Tire. Also considering the Yoko Avid V4S, both have gotten some good reviews. The YK 520 is asymmetrical, while the V4S is directional and some say a bit louder.

i had pilot sport a/s's on my old car and hated them...then went to traction ta's and they were much better cept in the snow...they were much worse.

i was stuck between the toyo proxies 4's and the avid v4s...i went avide v4s because at the time they had decent winter reviwes....now i find out that they are horible in the snow from what i here (going with snow anyway). the avids are nice and smooth...not to loud...but they have a softer side wall than the stockers wich is my only complaint.

next time i'm trying hte goodyear gds3's or the proxies

BFG Traction T/A Pro OR Bridgestone Potenza RE950 ?

Both seem to have close ratings on the dry/wet tractions on Tirerack. Any suggestions (especially considering the noise) ?

Thanks

Got a set of Michelin Destiny (Energy variant) installed, $400 CAD (got a deal from a friend of mine). Tires are very silent, and perform great. My only gripe (and it's a minor one) is that with them on, the car pulls left and right when going along streetcar tracks.

My winter set is Blizzaks WS-50. Excellent winter tire, though pretty noisy on dry pavement (to be expected).
