Hey guys sorry I have a couple of noob quesitons.....recently while I was driving for like 20 minutes (blasted music) I realized my passenger rear tire was making all these crazy loud sound and smelled funny after I hit the streets.......I dunno much about tire but I knew something was wrong, I touch the tire and it seem like it was losing air....i thought it was a flat so I brang it to the shop to fix the tire. However, the mechanic said the tire was unfixable and it was not a flat. He wasnt able to fix the wheel because the inside got all messed up so I had to buy a new tire (Cooper Lifeliner Touring SLE (VR) ) 215/55/17....I told my dad that the wheel felt funny and shaky before this but the ironic thing was it was on the driver rear side that I felt the little minor shaking, but somehow the passenger rear got messed up first....so few weeks later ... So today I brang my car to change my oil in the Exxon Mobil gas station....when the mechanic lifted up the car he realized one my tire was no good (driver rear) ...he told me I was gonna have problems soon if i kept on driving because the tire is melting inside?...so I had to buy another tire.....same tire Cooper Lifeliner...first purchase was 144$ and then 127$
1) I didnt get a chance to ask the mechanic, but how do the tire melt inside? Is this consider the tire wearing out? How can I tell if a tire is wearing out?
2) In addition, he put both of the Cooper Tires and mount them into the front wheels..and took the front 2 and put it in the back..he told me it was better.....but now since driving it feel different and the back feel wierd? He told me the 2 tires were still decent Why would it be better to put the good tires in front since the rear wheels seem like the ones getting mess up...just wondering?
3) Are the wheel I am purchasing good since it seem expensive? The first time the passenger rear tire got messed up, the shop only had that tire, so I had to buy that tire.....And is my width and profile good for a maxima? It seem many people in this forum have a profile of 45>.... And say if I change the profile or width, will it be able to still fit the rims if it r17? What would be the best width and profile?
Sorry for all these noob questions..but thanks! PLuS I have a Maxima Gle 2002

Thats not TOO bad of a price on tires. I bet my melt he meant wore on the inside. He did the right thing by putting the new rubber on the front. You have a front wheel drive car, you need better traction up front.
It's simple to tell if a tire is wearing out, just look at it. The naked eye can usually tell if there is uneven wear.
Just because tires are expensive doesn't mean they are good. I think the size they put on is the stock size, and this is what is recommended with what you have on there already. I'm sure they just matched size to what you had already. Any good shop would.
Any 17 inch rim will fit into a 17 inch tire unless it is too wide for the rim or vice versa. The best width and profile would be the stock size. Check all your tires and make sure they all are the same 215/55/17.

everything sounds correct what they did. i think the issues with your shredding or melting tire is underinflation. either you had a slow leak and you rode around on a low tire which would cause the sidewalls to disintergrate after a while or if you drive around on low pressure.
I take it he didn't like the answers he got here to now hijack this thread.
$270 should be enough of a lesson to take 5 minutes and check the tire pressures on a regular basis, but on second thought, maybe daddy is footing the bill...

Michelin Pilot Exalto...
Stock tires were Goodyear RSAs...hazardous in the rain
Replaced with a set of Bridgestone RE-950...outstanding wet weather traction, good handling, excellent wear, but a bit noisy at lower speeds
Have been running the Michelins for a month or so now and have been very happy with them...good ride, very quiet, nice handling. We'll see how they hold up over time.

chillax ccs, i just start driving few months ago, and i pay the wheels myself since it broke down on my watch..anyway it aint my car, my dad doesnt really drive it as much so i take it out.....so i don't know anything about this car, tire pressures or whatever......are the psi specific for each specific tire or just the vechile? anyway i was looking at these yohama avid v4s wheels if anything happen again. are these wheels good? there UTQG looks amazing ...500 AA A...high performance all-season......i was wondering why was it so cheap $106 compare to many other tires that has a lower treadlife, or traction! Thanks for your help nismo and cmax!
Anyone ever use Nitto-450's? How are they for grip, road noise?
What about Yokohama AVID V4S? grip, road noise?
These are relatively well priced tires at discount tire. With all of the bad reviews about Falken Ziex 512, I definitely want a decent priced alternative.

I see from a couple of you that you swapped the standard size (225/50R17) for a lower profile tire..(235/45R17) Can anyone comment if this makes a differance in the ride. I am looking for new tires after I got 40k and 6 years out of the old Potenz. The reason I ask is there are a few tires that only come in the latter size. Goal is to get the best 4 tires for under 500 out the door.
Difference in ride?? I didn't feel any IMO. Ride is prominently affected by the suspension setup. I used to have 225/50, then I had 225/45, and now I have 235/45. Lookswise, the 225/50 and 235/45 is very close. The only reason why I changed from 225/45 to 235/45 is to have less wheel gap. The pic below shows the difference (same drop):

All-seasons: michelin hydroedge
215/55/16
about 40k miles
Had them for about 40k miles. Excellent tire for your typical family sedan. It has a long treadwear rating (100k i believe). It's a very quiet and comfortable riding tire. Dry handling is so-so but its not a performance oriented tire. Wet performance is awesome! I have never hydroplane or lost control in the wet. For those that care, it has a summer tire looking tread design. They are on the expensive side (applies to all michelin tires) - but you get what you pay for. Overall, I would try these out if you're looking for a long lasting all-season tire.
summer :hankook rs-2s

about 1k miles
First time getting summer tires for my daily driver. Used to have michelin hydroedge all-seasons on stock 16" rims.
I have only 1000 miles on them. These tires are loud (except on the highway - above 60mph its as quite as my michelins) and they track every rut, crack and uneven surface on the road. They do stick like glue though compared to the all-seasons. Excellent in the dry but have not tested it in the wet yet. Its still too early to tell how I rate them but IMO, its one of the top bang for your buck performance tires right now.
I think Irish (sp?) have the same tires for his car and he loves it.
winter : toyo observe go-2 plus

about 15k miles
Had them for 2 winter seasons (about 15000 miles) and they're great. Saved my butt a few times. Excellent traction on ice and snow. They are very loud and you can just throw the handling part out the window (maybe because of the 65 series sidewall) Overall I'm very happy with them and I'm never going to use all seasons again for winter! I might try out the Hankook icebar w300 (more performance oriented winter tires) when these wear out because I've heard good reviews on them.

Just had some Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S's tossed on my stock 16's (215-55-16)
Smooth, grippy, quiet and pleasantly comfy. Very happy with my final choice, especially after torturing myself for a good 6 months trying to figure out what to get.

Avon Tech M550, great all around tire...amazing wet traction..pretty good turn in and great breaking, although not as good as eagle fl gs-d3. i never liked good year until i had gs-d3's. in the wet corners and brakes like ur in the dry..and in the dry its like super glue. gsd3 got rave reviews on all the car websites.
'04 SL has Continental ContiTouringContact. They look pretty good with a decent trend pattern. I need a new set in about 9 months, so I'm starting to look for some good choices. I was thinking about those Falkens, but seem to be some negative reviews mixed in with the goods ones. So now i'm leaning towards HydroEgde, Yokohamas or maybe some more Continentals. I guess time will tell.
HELP, HELP, HELP!!!!
Please recommend a better tire
One that really grips / feels the road, gives some feedback.
Just got 4 Yokohama AVID V4S, from Tire Rack. Hate them. The treads look like they have snow in mind. I only have a few days to get my money back (30 day money back warranty) at a retailer here in LA, what do I do?
In the city driving (Los Angeles), its, not bad, grips, corners OK.
As soon as you go over 50 miles per hour, on the highway, it feels, like a "boat" ride, it gives a "Floating feeling", like at any moment they will float off the road. Not good at all.
I think since I am in LA, I just need a Ultra or Max Performance tire, checked Tire Rack for these best in these classes.
I also got 17" wheels from a 2001 Maxima for my 1998 Maxima, therefore it seems I am limited to 225/50/17 (i didn't realize that).
