theres only one plug like that in that area that'll fit into the alternator, it shouldn't be too hard to find

that's exactly why. without getting into too much detail on nissan charging systems, the alternator will not charge with that plug disconnected until you reach 3000 RPM. that plug supplies electricity to the alternator's internal electromagnet, which is needed in order to generate power. if there is no power going to the electromagnet (field coil) no power will be produced, and at 3000 RPM the voltage regulator self-excites the field. you'll have a steady, consistent voltage default of the high 14s. it's not good to run the alternator with this plug disconnected, because it also controls the charge indicator light on the dash. this is the very first one on that strip that looks like a little car battery (turn the ignition on without cranking the engine - I bet it does NOT light up!!!), and the other wire is the sense lead, so that the regulator knows when the battery is fully charged and to start cutting off the output. running at a consistent, unregulated voltage of the high 14s could eventually lead to overcharging the battery.

if, when you first turn your ignition ON without cranking the engine, the alternator light does NOT come on, this is your first indication that there's a charging problem. when that light comes on before you start the engine, it means the alternator's internal circuitry and regulator are all OK. it's about the easiest, most dependable charging system diagnostic you can do. and it only takes 3 seconds to glance over at it. second indication is if it actually comes on while you're driving, which really only happens when the belt breaks.

hmmmm thanks, it does put out 13.9 volts whnen first cranked now, also that explains why my battry was leaking it was over charging it like crazy.

or if the regulator fails
