Survey: Remote starter add-on.

Hey all,
I've got a question:
Does anyone have any experience with those remote starter/automatic door & trunk opener systems? I'd like to pick one up and install on my '92, but I'm wondering about how it will interact with the factory security system. I don't want a situation where I start the car from 300' away and the alarm goes off.
Any help is appreciated.

i have a 2002 maxima and i was told in order for you to put in a remote strater either you have to redoe the factory alarm sys to work with it or you have to over ride the security system i don't what it all means except the remote strater was $40 and to install it is over $300 but have a proffessional look at it first get a quote and talk to nissan them selves i hope i helped you out some

i believe you have to overide the oem alarm system by rewiring a few things.
but don't ask me how the hell to do it.
i'm waiting on someone else to reply 2 the post that really knows what they're doing. since i plan on doin' the same thing this summer.

I'm not sure on the Max, since I just got it last week. But I have a 2000 Blazer with remote start and an after market alarm. Mine works fine, you just don't arm the factory alarm, EVER. But I would have to check on the Max, I can't seem to lock the doors without arming the factory alarm. Oh, does anyone know where I can pick up some remotes for the factory alarm, the car didn't come with any and I'm sure it has keyless entry and a factory alarm.

Time to be unsure. Far as I know, my 94SE doesn't have keyless entry, it has that factory alarm, but no remote, you just arm it with the power locks. GXE might, I'm not very familiar with them, but if you've got an SE, I don't think you'll find any remotes.

no US 3rd gens came stock with remote keyless entry
some dealers have added them after they got to their dealership but it's not a genuine option or feature so it could be different models if you think you have one on your car

GXEs came standard with the keypad on the door that controls lock/unlock, sunroof, trunk and windows

yes, you can easily wire a remote starter/keyless entry into the stock alarm and make it arm and disarm when necessary. Some alarms come with arm/disarm outputs, if not, you can do it just using the lock and unlock and a diode - search for more info

all you have to do is send a 1 sec ground pulse from the output of the starter module to the disarm pin on the factory alarm.
as has been said, wiring diagrames are on my website, and I'm not sure what all goodies are on craig's. it's not hard tho. I've installed a couple of alarms and remote start systems on various nissans with this system. easy stuff.

Remote Starter

I put the Bulldog remote start on my '93SE two winters ago. It had the ground wire to disarm the alarm, but did not include a wire to rearm. It was a terrible unit with very short range and many other annoying features. Despite the issues, I loved being able to jump into a warm the car in the winter and cool car in the summer.

I ended up pulling out the Bulldog and replaced it with the Crimestopper starter. It was a huge improvement. Anyone of the quality remote starters should be able to disarm/arm the factory system and not cause any problems. I have the Crimestopper set-up to disarm/arm, lock/unlock the doors and pop the trunk and everything works great.

It is a simple process to test the wire to see which one grounds when a key is placed in the door and turned to the unlock position. You should be able to splice the disarm output into this wire. Repeat the process for the lock position and hook in the arm wire.

Three other notable things:
1) I would advise you to hook the starter up with the tach feature. This will ensure that the car starts on the first try. Otherwise, the results can be less predictable on cold mornings.
2) Nissans have two starter wires, one that runs the starter and another that gives and extra boost to the fuel pump (at least that is what I was told). Be sure to get an extra relay to be able to provide juice to both these wires when starting.
3) I have put a couple of these in and the first step is to call the tech support line and ask the to fax me the Wire Magic sheet on the car. This is a third party service that tells all the wire colors and factory alarm issues. It is very helpful.

If you like, I can email you a picture of where I spliced-in or provide you with the wire colors.

Good luck!

Thanks for all of the input. Unfortunately, I have the Bulldog system. It calims an 800' range, but you say that you had problems with it, maybe I'll return it and upgrade to something else.

If it's not too much trouble, I'd like that picture of the wire splices and colours.
Thanks!

I installed the bulldog system a few days ago. If your technically inclined, its not bad at all. There is a connection on the unit that will override the factory system. Most of the wires all tap off of 1 harness under the steering column.
As for the range though, it blows. It says 400 feet, and it doesnt go 2 houses over

I have the 800' range model and it has an external antenae, I wonder if this would produce better range? I guess I get what I pay for.

Well, I stand corrected. I guess I will have to get an aftermarket alarm with keyless entry. I just figured if the car had a factory alarm that it had remotes with it. My bad
